Unless the salary cup almost doubles in a few more years then the new Kane and Toews contracts screams end of a dynasty. Good luck signing your RFA's and free agents with two players who both have record setting cap hits. f***ing Blackhawks. Way to set the market prices at preposterous levels now. This pisses me off because when Kopi's contract comes up next year, he may ask for the same amount that Toews did since he has the same agent Captain Serious does. Just what the f***, man?

Also what was the point of the lockout again? Anywho one day contracts do exist in the NHL. Modano signed one with the Stars

I think it's a nice symbolic gesture.

Some guy put together the top 30 hockey calls of all time. And Miracle on Ice wasn't number 1. f*** that guy and his list.

The Avs and Ryan O'Reilly came to terms on a 2 year contract and avoided arbitration! HELL YEAH!

Kreider and the Rangers worked it out too. Along with Zuccarello.

I'm enjoying all the "Devils are the sleeper pick for 2014" articles that have been coming out, not just because it makes me feel better about next season, but because it's opened up discussions among Devils fans concerning more advanced statistics in hockey.
The Devils wound up being something like the first or second team to have the type of puck possession numbers they had last season and not make the playoffs (since the stats started being kept circa 2007). The Devils went 0-for-13 in shootouts or whatever. The Devils better goaltender last year, Cory Schneider, only played half the games and was often victimized by lower scoring than Brodeur got.
Thus, you've got the combined factors of a lack of scoring depth (especially with the successive departures of Parise and Kovalchuk), but also a handful of statistical anomalies that suggest the Devils are a better team than they showed last season.
This has opened a lovely can of worms that reminds me of when baseball fans began discussing sabermetrics with more regularity, as CORSI and FENWICK become bigger presences in hockey.
...Either way, go NJD, down with the Rags and Philthy.

It seems like a lot of east teams got worse and only a few improved. Like only NJ, Florida (lol), Buffalo (still not a playoff team), Washington (depends on Trotz), NYI, and Tampa improved while the rest got worse or the exact same time of last season. The only team in the East I'm confident that gotten really good in the off season is Tampa. Plus they might have the best prospects in the league. Drouin and Stamkos sounds so dangerously sexy. I still think Dallas is going to be this years Colorado of this seasons surprise powerhouse team.

It helps that the Devils have hired a professional poker player as an analytics kind of guy. They've gotten smarter in the front office even if (or maybe because?) Lou sometimes seems out of touch with modern hockey.

Good the NHL needs more outdoor games outside of the Bettman Seven. They just need to be heavily promoted as the winter classic though

The others will be part of the Coors Light NHL Stadium Series.

I know that's the problem. A Sharks vs. Kings would be a better game based on rivalry, two really good teams, and a brand spanking new football stadium then the insanely random matchup between the dwindling Capitals and the Blackhawks. Plus it may not be that snowy in DC for the visual.

Canada also has the Heritage Classic which will be between two Canadian NHL teams, although there may not be one of those this year. This Kings-Sharks game will not be on January 1 thus it cannot be the Winter Classic.

I can agree with that, I have a feeling that this is more of an NBC thing since they guarantee to have the Winter Classic and the other ones are not that guaranteed.

I also rather have San Jose and LA as the Winter Classic. Like the casual audience seems to only think 8 teams exist thanks to NBC and get confused come playoff time

I'm just waiting for the eventually Pens/Flyers Winter Classic in Beaver Stadium. That's going to be amazing.

Of all the Bettman Seven Teams Philly and Pittsburgh have the best rivalry and both cities would sell out both of their football stadiums quickly and easily break the attendance record in beaver stadium.
