So, which Snake do you prefer? Solid Snake, the main protagonist of Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 4. He is the main protagonist of the Series. Big Boss aka Naked Snake, Venom Snake, Punished Snake. Big Boss is the main protagonist to Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid peace Walker, Portable Ops and Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain/Ground Zeroes. He is one of the main Villains of the series. For me, I'd have to choose Big Boss. Personally, I find his story and character much more interesting than Solid Snake which is why I'm really excited for The Phantom Pain.

I was brought up with the legenedary mercenary. Big Boss has the most interesting story, but Solid Snake is one of my two favourite video game characters of all time (the other being SANGER! SANGER ZONVOLT! THE SWORD THAT CLEAVES EVIL!) so I HAVE to choose him.

I always thought Big Boss had much more personality than Snake and I think his story is way more compelling. I guess that's the advantage of being the villain, you actually get to have agency and goals rather than just reacting to things that happen to you. That and Snake Eater is my personal favorite game in the series.

Solid Snake because
1. HEADBAND 2. 80's hair 3. Real men start off with teeny tiny LIFE meters 4. He has a way better hero/villain dichotomy due to his rivalry with Liquid/Ocelot 5. SURVELLIANCE CAMERA?!?!

I always feel like people treat Liquid Snake like dirt.
But I had to pick Solid.

That's because Solidus isn't worth giving a shit about (I mean: he came from MGS2, so he's blacklisted by the fanbase).

The next game will decide this quite a bit. It seems clear to me that Kojima feel deeply, madly in love with Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid 3 and he has since become the absolute central character in the series. He was always important, but now absolutely everything from the beginning to the end of the series revolves around him.
And with how he's been written, I'd tend to agree. Solid Snake has a soft spot in my heart, but I almost always realize how the coolest things that Solid Snake did actually happened in Metal Gear Solid 3 and were done by Big Boss.
It's also pretty hard to call Big Boss one of the main villains of the series at this point, despite all the evil things he did in Metal Gear 1 (They immediately started making him affably evil in Metal Gear 2). He's been effectively retconned as a pretty cool guy who may have been a little extremist at times.

Honestly, I half expect Kojima to remake MG and MG2 when he's done with The Phantom Pain.

Big Boss, but not by much. I feel he is better at infiltration which is how I like to play my D&D characters.

Liquid never gets any love. Always thought he was pretty cool.
Anyways I have to give the green light to Big Boss. Loved his style, his never say die attitude, and the fact that, unlike Solid Snake, went into a coma for 9 years, woke up, and continued his mission.
Pssshhh Snake goes on to wander the outskirts of Alaska being a musher like Johnny Cage and Liu Kang touring the Outworld.

Solid Snake for me. He may not undergo as much development as Big Boss, but the way he's depicted so differently in each of the Solid games makes him just as compelling to me. He goes from a world-weary killer in MGS, to an almost mythic figure in 2, and finally to a broken-down relic in 4, but throughout it all remains a heroic, legendary figure.
The games they're involved in also counts for a lot. MGS 1, 2, and 4 are basically my favorite games of all time. I really liked 3 but wasn't as invested in it as the others, Peace Walker was fun but not spectacular, and Ground Zeroes was fun but also extremely grim and humorless (a trend that Phantom Pain looks to be continuing in spades).
