Watching the El Dandy promo...
1.Why the hell was Bret United States Champion? I guess I can ask the same about when he won it in 2010 too -___-. But its like if John Cena won the belt today and paraded around as champion.
2.Exactly what was his character arc in WCW? I know he debuted to prevent the nWo from screwing Sting and then he had a match with Flair...then he joined the nWo, and I guess ended up turning face after Owen died before ending as a Heel against Goldberg?
Yikes, Bret was misused.

I always felt the rise of Goldberg did something to derail Bret a bit.

Bischoff did a lot right in WCW but one thing he was terrible at was basically just hiring people so that Vince couldn't hire them and then not bothering to do anything about it.

WCW shouldnt have signed him in teh first place. They didnt need him and had nothing for him to do.
WCW had its stars and its programs was worked out. All they did was give Vince a "Get out of jail free" card.

Lots of main eventers, not enough time for the main event as for why Bret was a US Champion. Goldberg was even a US Champion in 1999. It always feels wrong when a World Champ goes to a lower title. They've outgrown it and it can't like any other than humiliating if you watched them go up. Probably different circumstances as I wasn't watching Raw at the time, but Jericho being an IC champ again made me sad.

It's like an All-Star joining a team full of fellow All-Stars and got lost in the shuffle. Bret was brought in with no purpose other than sticking it to WWF and having bragging rights about Hart being on the roster.

I feel like the signed Bret just for the sake of signing Bret, with no plan of what to actually do with him.

Cause I couldn't go to bed and have no life, here's a very brief rundown I did of Bret's early WCW run (January to July 1998), with help from RSPW and DDTDigest Nitro reports. Man, his run sucked. Lots of dropped balls as well, just in the first few months {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}January 1998 - Face (For the most part) - Feuds with Flair over who the real "Best there is..." in wrestling is - Beats Flair at Souled Out, challenges the winner of Sting/Hogan at Superbrawl to a title match
Febuary 1998 (Around this point, the NWO is starting to fracture between the Nash-Wolfpac camp and Hogan-Hollywood camp) - Face - Hogan announces Hart as being on his "hit list", as well as Sting, Savage, etc. - On the same night, gets attacked by the nWo and a debuting Bryan Adams (Until Flair saves him) - Bret challenges Curt Hennig to a match at Uncensored for some reason
March 1998 - Face - Bret beats Curt at Uncensored, runs into matches between Curt and Bulldog/Anvil and whines about being screwed
April 1998 - April 20: BRET TURNS HEEL!!! - During a Nash/Sting match, Bret pulls the ref out just as Nash is going to win. Hart then beats down the nWo - The night after Spring Stampede, during a Hogan/Savage match for the title, Bret pulls an unconscious Hogan on top of Save and raises his arm after the match.
May 1998 - Heel - Bret helps Bryan Adams win a match against Konnan (He forgives easy, I guess) - Bret defeats Randy Savage at Slamboree after he is put on Savage's "hit list", Piper is the guest referee - Savage and Piper start to team up against Hogan and Bret, leading to the Great American Bash
June 1998 - Heel - Bret begins hanging out with Hogan more, hanging out in his skybox and all that. It's also important to note that by the time of the Great American Bash, Bret has not worn an nWo shirt (He did wear a Hogan shirt) nor has he given any explanation as to why he's aligned with Hogan. He does enter to the nWo theme though - At the GAB, Bret/Hogan beat Piper/Savage in one of Bret's worst matches ever
July 1998 - Heel - Enters a very brief feud with Booker T, with the blow-off at Bash at the Beach where Bret is DQ'd for hitting Booker with a chair - Wins the vacated US title in a "match" against DDP where DDP was beaten throughout the night by the nWo - At this point, teases of a feud with Sting start to surface on Nitro

Signing Bret should've been the nail in WWF's coffin but they f**ked it up royally.

According to Bret, they had no plans early, but he and Bischoff came up with a good angle for him as US champ with him injuring guys after matches (He injured DDP, Sting, and Benoit) leading into a Goldberg feud. But Bret got hurt pretty bad so they laid seeds for a Goldberg feud and then Owen died and Bret just was never really interested in coming back, but did so he could get his mind off of it

Bret had a pretty good feud with Goldberg, actually.
Other than that, his WCW run was a disaster. The guy just got lost in the shuffle and didn't have any backstage stroke to get him ahead of the curve.

Big waste, I always wonder where Bret would have gone had he stayed in the WWF though. So the plan was to continue battling Shawn through the Rumble and then dropping the belt to Steve Austin at Mania. Where does that leave us?
Would Shawn have been injured? He wouldnt have worked a casket match at the Rumble. Austin would go onto face new challengers, where would Bret and Shawn be.. perhaps Shawn would be Austins first feud after Mania, Bret possible feud with HHH? Maybe even Bret turning face and joining Austin to battle a heel DX.. strange to think how it could have been.
Bret leaving changed things massivley.

The 20 year deal that Vince had signed with Bret in '96 was three years as an active wrestler before transitioning to a backstage role so I think his wrestling days would have been over by 1999/2000 anyway (minus the Goldberg concussion). Before Survivor Series '97, the Harts did an angle with the NOD. Bret could have had terrific matches with Farooq and Rock.

Oh yeah, forgot about The Rock. Would have been a perfect post Mania angle for Bret to turn face then battle The Rock.

True, but that was largely because Randy insisted on his brother getting a job. I always imagine they hired Lanny and then just forgot he was on the payroll. Hard for me to believe out of all the guys they used over the years, they could never think of anything for Lanny to do, even if it was just to appear in the World War 3 battle royal instead of Pez Whatley.

My friends and I used to joke about how Bret (like a senile grandpa that nobody wants to confront)would wander around backstage at NITRO and just go out to the ring at random and the wrestlers/refs/announcers were told to just deal with whatever he did.
That's about how I can best describe his WCW run. Random wandering.
