The only way Goodell could even come close to "getting it right" at this point is to completely look the other way if the players take it upon themselves to police the integrity of the game. If when Ray Rice steps back on the field he is greeted with a helmet to the knee or head, there should be no punishment, no fines, no suspension. If the league won't end the coward's career, they shouldn't punish someone for doing it for them.
EDIT: On a related note, I wonder if ESPN's "journalists" will ask Rice's teammates their feelings about sharing a locker room with a sociopathic domestic abuser. I wonder if Ray Rice is a "distraction." What are his showering habits? If Michael Sam almost lost out on his dream of playing pro ball because he is gay and the media couldn't handle it, what about the circus or distraction that should always be attached to Ray Rice now. The sad part is, I expect the story to die down. The low-class Ravens fans actually applauded this scumbag when he stepped foot on the practice field. What a hero. SMH

I see all this, and as disgustingly horrible this guy's actions are...
...all I can think of right now is "WWE are going to get Stephanie/Triple H to accuse Daniel Bryan of spousal battery for cheap heat, aren't they?".

Ok, one more thing. I know it is easy to focus on the NFL side of this, but here's a better question. Why is Ray Rice not in jail right now? Ray Rice walking the streets freely is a bigger outrage than his suspension in a lot of ways. FFS there is a video that shows Ray Rice punching his fiancee right in the face. There is enough evidence for an assault conviction without any kind of BS plea deal that allows him to avoid jail. Just shows that law enforcement/prosecuting attorneys really could care less about domestic violence in large part because of how sexist those systems remain to this day.

It is far from a cut and dry, easy to prosecute thing. If she refuses to press charges, refuses to testify or even agrees testify on his behalf, video or not, you don't have much of a case. For prosecutors it is far easier to get plea deals for weak punishments than taking these cases to trial.

Regarding the Colts, at what point do we start saying "maybe the Colts aren't that good and are division winners b/c the division is that bad?" It seems like every game the Colts are behind and Luck brings them back to win it, when in fact he plays a huge role in why they're losing in the first place. Luck had a really good night, his stat line looks like crap because both of his picks came off of bad catches by his receivers. Also coupled with the fact that the Denver defense clamped down on the Colts, in addition to Luck having those bad picks, and the fact that Peyton Manning dictated his offense, resulting in a much longer time of possession in the first half, I wasn't surprised the Colts got down the way they did. I was pissed off, of course, but it wasn't too shocking. As for the question, I still think the Colts are legit contenders, but even good teams have bad nights, and Denver wanted to prove something more with regards to what happened last year. We'll see about that next Monday when they play at home against Philadelphia as to whether or not Colts fans should enter panic mode and everybody else starts the "overrated" comments.

In some states you don't need the assaulted person to press charges to go after them for domestic assault. UNFORTUNATELY New Jersey isn't one of them. This might sound bad but, unfortunately without her cooperation, the slap on the wrist was the best the prosecutor was going to be able to get in this case. If this had happened somewhere else, with that evidence, maybe they don't need her help. In Jersey though you need the person to press charges to really get any type of charges brought to the assaulter.

So the league is saying they didn't see the video. Even though it was reported in July that they had additional footage not released to the public. So either Goodell is lying to cover his ass or TMZ just out scooped the biggest sports league in the world. There's two ways to look at the NFL saying they'd never seen the elevator video released this morning: 1. The league did a shoddy job of investigating the incident and this is more or less an admission of incompetence and negligence. 2. The league did see the video and are lying to cover the fact that Ray Rice only received a two-game suspension. Either option makes the NFL look absolutely horrible. There is really no way for the league to protect itself on this one.

What I don't get is how does Ray Rice look worse. Its about what I expected it to be when I heard about it so unless the fact that we can see it makes people feel differently I don't get the extra outrage on him. Now the NFL sure but Ray Rice is about the same bastard I thought he was when I heard about it

Now the NFL sure but Ray Rice is about the same bastard I thought he was when I heard about it There's probably just something about actually *seeing* Ray Rice absolutely clobber a woman and then stand over her without showing a hint of compassion/remorse, *then* dragging her limp body out of the elevator, only to again just kinda stand over her unconcious body. He looks like an even bigger coldhearted f*** than people imagined when the story came out

True. Lewis...I feel like deep down even his/The Ravens biggest supporters knew, but without the smoking gun, could claim denial. Ray Rice basically threw a Tyson style punch and now the whole world saw/will see it. He's a f***ing coward and I can't imagine that he's very popular among his peers anymore Rice out-and-out attacked another person for no particular reason. Now I'm not trying to justify what Ray Rice did or domestic violence, because it was wrong, but you can't say it was for no reason. You don't know what led up to that moment.

They could convince themselves that "maybe it wasn't as bad" etc. Essentially it allowed em to rationalize things if they weren't really faced with it.
