What are some movies which have almost nothing to do with the books theyre based off of? Forrest Gump is the first one that comes to mind, the book is much crazier and satirical. Jenny and Dan are in the book and the relationship between them and forrest is similar, but thats about it. I also recently saw King Solomon's Mines (the 1985 version) and it also has little to do with the book, they even gave Allan a female sidekick. It looks more like they were trying to cash in on both the Indiana Jones movies and Romancing the Stone.

Jurrasic park & j.p: the lost world are very different from the books.

Ultimately very little of La Planète des singes made the journey onto the screen in Planet of the Apes (there's arguably more of the novel present in Escape from the Planet of the Apes).

Blade Runner and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? are very different. The whole concept of Mercerism is non-existent in the film and the importance of animals, which is a defining trait for the characters in the book, is downplayed.

Shrek, How to Train Dragon (one of my favorites), League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Starship Trooper, the 2005 War of the Worlds, 1995 Scarlet Letter, and to some degree Jaws.

JAWS is actually very different from the book, and that is a good thing because the book was utter crap.

World War Z.
I guess you can see that it takes a bit from a specific even detailed in the book, but it's pretty much World War Z "in name only"

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. While some of the movies deviated from the books, HBP was ridiculously far removed from its book. All the main themes were ignored, as was a good majority of the overall plot from the book.

Mary Poppins was not the proper, happy English nanny she was in Disneyland. (to the chagrin of Ms. Travers, as you'll know if you saw Saving Mr. Banks)

Based on the trailer, The Giver doesn't look like it.

Wanted is nothing like the comic in like any conceivable way.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit is nothing like Who Censored Roger Rabbit either.

I think most of the Bond Movies named after Bond stories aren't that similar to them. Like from what I remember Quantum of Solace is a short story someone told Bond.

Just about any Disney movie based on a novel. Michael Crichton's Congo took a lot of liberties too, iirc.

JAWS is actually very different from the book, and that is a good thing because the book was utter crap. While I kinda liked the book, the movie smokes it's ass in about every way possible. It should almost be used as textbook example of "Sometimes a movie improves on the source material".

It should almost be used as textbook example of "Sometimes a movie improves on the source material". The characters in the book were all very wooden and unlikeable, while the movie gave them far more depth and made them sympathetic. The book also had far too many subplots going on that robbed the main story about the shark of its thrust, while the movie cut all that out and kept the focus entirely on the man vs nature struggle.

The Lawnmower Man is based off of the Stephen King short story of the same name, but aside from the shared title, the two couldn't have less to do with each other.
