Just got back from Las Vegas a few days ago. Greatest place on earth by the way, and so now I'm wanting to go back. I've got one of 2 possible times in mind, my birthday (October 30) and New Year's. Let's look at the stats.
October 30- Halloween Spent 21'st there too Birthday, maybe a lot of free shots* It's sooner
New Years- It's New Years More time to save $$$ January in Ohio sucks *If you're gambling you can get free drinks anyway

It depends on if you like crowds and if you can get reservations. New Years will probably be crowded and most hotels already booked solid.

good point, crowds I don't mind but a quick travelocity search showed a signiffigant price increas for NYE. Chances are favoring Halloween.

Expect to pay out the yin-yang for anywhere in Vegas for New Year's.
Halloween would be much better and I think a lot more fun.
