A masterpiece or boring cinematic poetry?
Years ago I tried it but fell asleep, bored out of my mind. But since I recently started reading Arthur C. Clarke I gave the movie a try. It took two days (before and after intermission) but I finished it.
It's a great cinematic achievement but it's still boring as hell, I read about it online while watching to avoid losing interest. I just wanted to see it before trying the novels.
Just finished 2010 and must admit I enjoyed it but probably won't see it again.
One thing though, the HAL 9000 portion of 2001 had me completely riveted.
Any genuine fans here on FAN (pun very much intended)?

No doubt it's an extremely important masterpiece, but watching it all can be tedious. I agree that the HAL 9000 portion is the most riveting. Audiences in the 1960s had really never seen such incredibles visuals either. I'm a huge Kubrick fan, but 2001 is not something I can watch over and over. I much prefer watching A Clockwork Orange, Paths of Glory, Full Metal Jacket, The Killing, Lolita, and Dr. Strangelove.

Visually stunning, and a true technical marvel, but it's more boring than Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

I first watched it when I was around 11 or 12, and I hated it. I wasn't bored by it - granted, it is slow-moving, but I have a high tolerance for slow-paced motion pictures - but I thought the special effects were cheesy and the acting was melodramatic. I, of course, was comparing it to contemporary films and had no frame of reference as to how ahead of its time it was. It took me a couple viewings as an adult before I really "got" it, but once I did, it became one of my all-time faves - definitely in my top 3.

I'm a huge fan of Pink Floyd - Echoes, that should tell you how much I love 2001...
Me and my partner made up our bedroom as a projection room solely to watch the newest Blu Ray of the movie. Expanded into watching other films on the same set up but 2001 is amazing. Not my favourite film ever, but one of the classics even with a few dated performances.

I don't want to bad mouth Kubrick too much as he's Stanley f***ing Kubrick but there's a couple of his films that I think are technically flawless, well acted but boring. This is one of them. I put it on a same level as Citizen Kane. I understand the influence it had (and still has) and that it's almost a blueprint of how to Direct a Film whilst being more innovative than a lot of the films shat out of Hollywood every month. But although I have the DVD, I've only watched it a couple of times because I think it's a bit boring.
