I just read an interesting article on why the Hyperion cantos is unfilmable so I was wondering what other novels would be hard to film.

Ready Player One is going to be damn near impossible to do a true and faithful adaptation due to copyright issues. To simplify the long list of copyright hurdles, the book is about a virtual reality MMO that one of the things you can do in it is literally play movies. I don't mean watch movies, I mean you take control of one of the characters in a movie and you have to mimic their movements and repeat their lines and stuff.

The Silmarilion, even if Christopher Tolkien sold the film rights.

Yeah they are gonna TRY, but come on man.... {Spoiler}{Spoiler}The big epic climatic battle is between giant mechs from different properties..... That alone would be a copyright clusterf***.

Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Okay it wouldn't be unfilmable, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as good. [ending spoilers] {Spoiler}It just wouldn't have the same impact toward the end.

Probably Blood Meridian, but I would love to see any attempt.

Gump and Co.
The sequel novel to Forrest Gump was essentially written to be unfilmable after Winston Groom was screwed over by Hollywood Accounting practices that denied him any money from the movie's success (Holly Accounting techniques were used to label the film unprofitable and Groom's deal was to receive a percent of the profits$).
The first line of the book was "Don't never let nobody make a movie of your life's story."
It didn't stop them from trying to film it, but it never came to be.

Apparently The Illiad or just the story of Troy in general, as Hollywood always has to make the Greeks the villains.

Burger's Daughter, by Nadine Gordimer. That story is barely intelligible in novel format, so I don't know how the hell it could play out properly as a film.

That, and the Trojans had Hector and he was awesome. Yeah, there's a long history of people being sympathetic towards Troy--particularly due to Hector's nobility as a character. It's a very filmable story, but Hollywood always thinks that they can make it better and they never do. Just read the story and film it.

That, and the Trojans had Hector and he was awesome. Menelaus trying to recover his kidnapped wife is a great story. Plus the oath to recover Helen is a good plot mover, and I've read plenty of thing that make Agamemnon sympathetic. That, and the Trojans had Paris, who was a total douche. Also, would be nice to see the Gods in the story for once.

It's not even readable! And I say that as a man with a BA in Comparative Literature.

It's not even readable! And I say that as a man with a BA in Comparative Literature. I know. I've attempted it on two different occasions, and just threw in the towel both times. I might finish it one day; but the damn thing is nigh impenetrable.

Also, would be nice to see the Gods in the story for once. Yes, Paris is a douche but it is not as though he was not manipulated by the gods in the story. Aphrodite was the biggest heel in the story as she bribed Paris with the love of a married woman, though she did not tell him that little detail. Also, the whole war would not have happened if Zeus had nutted up and judged that beauty contest himself.

The Dark Tower series comes to mind. The initial three or so books would be easy enough, but as the series goes on it introduces a lot of elements that I don't think would translate well to film at all. {Spoiler}Let's see, there's Stephen King the traumatized self-insert author, Mordred the were-spider who is killed by a horrendous bout of diarrhea, the Crimson King throwing Harry Potter weapons at Roland, etc.
