I don't think anyone really knew for sure if Hogan was going to turn until the moment that Hogan showed up. I've read multiple times that they had Sting as a backup because no one was 100% sure that Hogan was going to go through with it. Yeah, Bischoff mentioned that in his book. Nobody knew if Hogan would go through with it 'til he arrived at the venue that night, if I remember right. I've always wondered what would've happened if they'd needed to go with Sting as the third man.

When Hogan came out I figured he was the third man. Heenan going "Who's side is he on" made me then think he wasn't.

I know this thread is about The Brain's line, but I've always felt Dusty's call of that match and the Hogan turn is terribly underrated.

At the time, this just further cemented the idea of Hogan NOT turning heel. It was a standard Heenan line, because OF COURSE Hogan was coming to help the good guys.

It was a perfect line. Heenan always hated Hogan so why would he see him as a hero showing up to save the day? It didnt "give away" anything as it seems like the nWo was still able to get over......

I actually got the chance to ask Hulk Hogan about that very thing last summer.
He basically said that if he had to nitpick, Bobby's line was the only thing he didn't love about his turn, but he didn't seem to be particularly mad or upset about it.

I don't feel strongly about it one way or another, but people are acting as though Heenan's only alternative would've been to sing Hogan's praises. Heenan could've said something disparaging about Hogan that was simultaneously less on the nose than what he actually said. But, Heenan supposedly didn't know that the twist was coming, so you can't really blame him. Had he known that it was coming, I have no doubt that he would've thought up a better line.

Yeah, something about Hogan swanning in to save the day and steal the glory, or hell, just staying silent for a few seconds.

After re-watching some 1996-7 WCW lately, I was reminded of just how Heenan's hate for Hogan went. Heenan would openly root for NWO members as long as they weren't Hogan. He liked what they were up to sometimes, but still hated Hogan.

Did it telegraph it? Perhaps a little.
Did it make sense for Heenan to say something like that? Yes.
Did it ultimately affect the angle in any real way? No.

The thing I didn't like about it was the thought of Hogan turning heel was in no one's mind at the time, when Heenan said that, people started to think "hey wait a minute, what if it IS Hogan?!" It would be like if you were watching Sixth Sense for the first time and someone said "hey, what if it turns out Bruce Willis' character is actually a ghost this whole time?", even if no one knew before, it makes the ending not as exciting.
However, my real issue with Heenan is the time Glacier came to the ring and the snow started falling and he says "Looks like Glacier has a bad case of dandruff"!

I love the Bobby Heenan character but there's no doubt that he was a distraction sometimes by putting himself over with the one liners instead of just putting over the characters or the situation in the ring. Glacier was kind of silly without Heenan's dandruff comment, but that was definitely not the thing to say when a guy is making his long-awaited heavily-hyped debut.
Like someone else said in this thread, it wasn't really necessary for Heenan to say what he said, nor for him to suddenly become a fan of Hogan. He could have just kept his mouth shut or said something neutral like "Here comes Hogan to steal the spotlight again! What a surprise!"
His comment hit different people in different ways. In the long run, whether Hogan's turn was given away on his way to the ring or not, it was still shocking and it still revolutionized wrestling.

People forget that before BatB 1996, the very notion of Hogan playing a heel was completely impossible to imagine after spending a decade plus being the ultimate good guy. It's easy to say now that it was painfully obvious whose side he was on, but the mere thought of Hogan being an evil, vindictive SOB before the nWo was something I had never expected to see, mainly because I didn't ever see his heel work prior to 1984.
As for Heenan's flub, that's on WCW management for not giving the men a heads up before Hogan walked down to assist Hall and Nash.

Absolutely nobody thought this. This did not happen to a single viewer for reasons previously stated in this thread.

This, to me, has always been one of the most overblown "issues" in wrestling. No. No "Playboy" Don Dougas it was a huge issue. Heenan totally killed the turn and thus the nWo angle from the start. To top that Steve Austin cut the 3:16 promo the next week and he got over as a mega star right away. We all remember that Raw after KoTR 1996 where Austin stunned Vader,Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels,Undertaker and Vince McMahon before Shawn just gave him the belt and WWF became the greatest thing ever full of attitude. Meanwhile poor WCW died because Bobby Heenan just couldn't keep his mouth shut about something that he hadn't had been smartened up about.

I've always been more annoyed by the announcers' immediate reaction to the heel turn. What we got was:
*Hogan leg drops Savage Schiavone: Oh my God! Dusty: Is he the third man? Heenan: He's the third man! Dusty: What the hell is going on here? Heenan: Hulk Hogan has betrayed WCW!
I would have preferred: *Hogan leg drops Savage Schiavone: *silence Dusty: *silence Heenan: *silence Sciavone: Oh .... my .... God Dusty: W ... T ... F Heenan: ***
