At the end of the day who does it come out to? I hear people saying Hogan started the business and Austin redefined it. So who's #1?

Hogan is still the most iconic wrestler of all time and the first name that would come to the lips of 90% of people who don't even like wrestling.

Hogan was largely responsible for the two biggest boom periods in wrestling history. Austin had a few year stretch where he was on fire. It's not even really that close.

In terms of impact over a specific period, Austin. In terms of impact over the whole sport, Hogan.

Hogan created the 80's boom Hogan created the 90's boom, which Austin took to whole new level.
gotta give it to Hulk though Austin is a bigger draw over short period of time and much better worker

Hogan is wrestling to people in wrestling and well, well outside it.

Hogan by a mile. His mainstream recognition blows Austin and even The Rock's (Dwayne Johnson) out of the water. I'm certainly not his biggest fan after his TNA run, but he can still draw mainstream recognition and apperances after 30 years in the public eye, and that's rare for anyone, let alone a wrestler.

Hogan, and it's not even close. When people call him the Michael Jordan of wrestling, it's not an exaggeration.

I don't know that I'd say his mainstream blows the Rock out of the water in the sense of EVERYTHING. As a wrestler, certainly, but Rock's really well known now too. Hogan's Americana no question, but Rock's damn well known outside of wrestling.

Hogan's Americana no question, but Rock's damn well known outside of wrestling. I think the Rock has certainly broken through to the mainstream and is well known, especially among younger people. To me, he doesn't even come close to Hogan though. Hogan was everywhere in the 80's. My grandparents knew Hogan and they cared nothing about wrestling. In the 80's and 90's, Hogan was as recognizable as Superman, He-Man and the Ninja Turtles. I've never known anyone who didn't know Hogan just by looking at him. The Rock? They probably heard of him, even if they're not wrestling fans, but couldn't necessarily pick him out of the crowd.

Hogan was more consistent over a longer period of time, although Austin for about three/four years reached a popularity level that Hogan never reached.

Austin is my favourite wrestler ever but Hogan is the biggest star of all time in wrestling. Obviously Rock is in contention too. Regardless, those three are the top three.

I'd say Rock is WAY more known overall, especially worldwide, but if you are going to base it on for what they did while primarily associated with the wrestling business, Hogan would be #1.

If you asked a none wrestling fan who these 2 are, I would imagine that Hogan would be the one name they know most.
