Man, I have Ray Rice on my fantasy team (not my choice, it was an auto draft because I was sick), so I need to replace him ASAP.
Scoring only league, I can replace him with he following FAs:
-Andre Williams -Devonta Freeman -Ladarius Green
Slim pickins to be sure, but I thought that Williams may be a TD vulture. I don't know where the Giants will score at all, so he might be out.

So I guess it comes down to who do you believe: the National Football League or the New Jersey State Police? The NFL this morning: New Jersey State Police respond: With seemingly each passing minute, the NFL is burying itself deeper in lies and misdirection. It's like an episode of "Boy Meets World" wherein Cory tells a little white lie to cover up for something, but the lies keep growing and growing to cover his tracks, and it spreads into something more grandiose that he can't handle. Is it possible that the NFL is telling the truth here and they screwed up, not realizing that they were applying to the wrong agency to get the video and therefore it was not made available to them? Reading those 2 statements makes it sound like to me the NFL thought that any criminal act in any part of the casino is handled by the state police, who only actually govern the gaming floor where the gambling takes place, leaving whatever happens in other parts of the casino under the jurisdiction of another agency? So maybe they're just dumb and not evil

So maybe they're just dumb and not evil Let's say they called state police and asked for the video. If the response they received was, "We don't have it," then the next question they should have asked would be, "OK, who does have it?" This reads like the NFL contacted state police, were told that the video was not in their possession, and that's where they ended their search. And if that's the case, then the NFL does the shoddiest, most haphazard job of investigating of any major corporation in history. If they are that incompetent, then every player who is ever fined or suspended again should have every right to appeal, and win their appeal, on the basis that the league's investigating body is presumably filled with idiots who have no idea what they are doing.

This is why nobody should give one man such unchecked power over a league. I'd give an arm and a leg for Pete Rozelle to rise from his grave and fix this mess.

Can't we just have Paul Tagliabue back?

Can't we just have Paul Tagliabue back? Tagliabue was excellent at expanding the league and working with the player's union, not aganist them. He would be better than what we have now, but he isn't/wasn't a visonariy who could fix the league of a lot of its problems like early Rozelle did (before the 80's) by uniting the owners to a general cause that would benefit all involved with the league, instead of just "I want my money and I want it NOW" like a lot of choices the league is making now. The next comissioner, after they fix this mess, also needs to be willing to relinquish some power, as Goodell has shown that the comissioner has way too much power as it is.

The NJ Attorney General's office said the video was Grand Jury material at the time and it would've been illegal to give it to the NFL.

NFL contacted the NJSP who probably told them that any potential evidence they had in ongoing criminal investigations could not be made available. You don't acknowledge whether you have a pending case or not, especially when given the location it could easily become your case, just that any potential evidence is not available. The NFL is not law enforcement and to think they can just drop their shield on a desk and get all the info necessary to investigate these things is foolish at best.

The NJSP is also right in that they didn't have the video. The Atlantic County DA's office did. They're completely separate entities.

I guess the NFL considered the matter resolved with the way the DA's office, Ray, and Janay all handled it and that they didn't need to investigate it further. I'd compare it to an ostrich burying its head in the sand pretending everything is ok, especially after that debacle of a 2 game suspension, followed by a well-justified public backlash.
I'm not sure what channels TMZ went through to obtain the video, legal or otherwise, but it wouldn't be related to evidence tampering since they released the video now well after the legal process played out.

I have Pierre Thomas as my "bye week/main RB's have a bad matchup" guy. Williams was pretty much a late round "might as well" pick.

If TMZ broke the law wouldn't they have charges being filed against them? I still think the NFL had seen the elevator video before all of this. As has been posted either in this thread or the thread prior, there were numerous reporters saying that the NFL either had the elevator video (Which one of them even accurately described) or had video not released to the public back in July. Either way, the fact that the NFL didn't do more punishment to Rice before this and the Ravens completely white washing the good name of Rice and painting him as a hero is disgusting and should lead to punishment.

The NFL is either incompetent or negligent; stupid or evil. Considering how much investigative power they have, I can't believe they'd be dumb enough to not see the video. Evil it is!

Another point brought up by Don La Greca on ESPN Radio: the casino this all happened in, Revel, just went under. So it's possible a former employee had a copy of the tape and sold it to TMZ for a nice payday.

No, we wouldn't know about it. Investigations into leaks take time and charges even longer. Plus as was said, we don't know that someone outside law enforcement had a copy and sold it when the time was right. Now, do I think the NFL saw the video, I don't know. There are too many people in the NFL chain of command with shit passed off on others all the time with other going on reports from the lower levels. Now if you're asking me if I think Roger Goodell saw it, I don't think he did. I'd put more money on some lower level stooge seeing this and passing a report upward that gets used, over Goodell and his crew actually working on this. That allows for some cash to change hands and some things that are less than reputable taking place in order to further their investigation but keep the NFL brass clean. When it comes to the original punishments and things of that nature, I agree.
