Some of the non-US versions of Brian Wilson's new album will contain 2 bonus tracks. One of which is Brian in 1975 singing "In the Back of Mind" (Dennis sung this on the 1965 album "Today!") It's of interest as it is supposed to be the last known recording of Brian using his smoother voice (it apparently goes back and forth from this to his gruff voice in the recording.)

I gotta stop forgetting about this thread...so I will be featuring a Beach Boys song every day until I run (or forget again ) Number one: Carnival (Recorded December 1969 and January 1970.) And we start with one of the more unusual ones. This was recorded during what would become the "Sunflower" album. It's a trip version of "Over the Waves" aka, that song you always hear at the circus. There's a lot of panning in this piece for sure to give a feeling that you are on a carousel. It was recently revealed by engineer Stephen Desper that this song would have been a "hidden tag" for "Take a Load off Your Feet" (which ended up being released on the next album, "Surf's Up.") It was basically the band's version of "Can You Take me Back?" (the song at the end of Cry Baby Cry from "The Beatles.") One of the many examples of Brian doing something out of the ordinary for his mainstream record.

You should have watched last week's episode of The Big Bang Theory, the Beach Boys played a huge role. They didn't appear, Sheldon had a song stuck in his head, couldn't figure out what it was, he thought he was going mad and listed off geniuses who went mad, and when he said Brian Wilson he realized it was "Darlin" by the Beach Boys.

I heard about it but I don't watch that show. #2: I Get Around (recorded April 1964) Something more conventional. This was the band's first #1 hit, replacing a Paul McCartney tune "World without Love" (sung by Peter and Gordon.) It starts with the chorus first as an intro before going into the verse. I really like how the chorus is kind of "a round" (where a melody is started and than is restarted by other voices. Row Row Row your Boat is another example.) It's pretty short also as it clocks just over 2 minutes (when the average song around this time goes for 2:30.)
