Think I tried this a few years ago but stopped for various reasons. Because I'm on a tablet, I can't post any pictures. We'll start with:
1. Made in California box set (2013)
Synopsis: This is a perfect set for the beginner to start with. EVERY era of the band is covered here from the beginning to their 2012 reunion album. The set has 6 CD's full of standards as well as rare and unheard tracks. The unheard tracks will be bolded. It also comes with a yearbook styled program that is really fun to look through.
Disc 1:
1. Home Recordings/Surfin' Rehersal Highlights (2012 Edit-Mono): Includes an a capella clip of the band and various others. The rehearsal is is pretty cool just to hear Brian threaten to beat Dennis up.
2. Surfin' (with Session Intro-mono): A cool behind the scenes look of the band doing takes of their first hit.
3. Their Hearts Were Full of Spring (Demo-mono): The band covers a hit by The Four Freshman, a band very influential on them.
4. Surfin' Safari (Original mono long version): Pretty much the song without a fadeout.
5. 409 (Original mono long version): Same as above
6. Lonely Sea (Original Mono Mix): Almost the same as above but with the producer announcing the take number at the beginning.
7. Surfin' USA: The hit that made them big.
8. Shut Down (2003 Stereo Mix): A different stereo mix of the song. Sounds better to the ears than the original stereo mix.
9. Surfer Girl: One of their best early songs.
10. Little Deuce Coupe: Probably their best car song.
11. Catch a Wave: A beach song that I feel is very underrated.
12. Our Car Club: One of the deeper cuts. Nice bouncy tune.
13. Surfers Rule (with Session Intro): One of the weaker songs with chatter. One of the "why is this here?" cuts.
14. In My Room: A very personal song and one of their best early cuts.
15. Back Home: The "Surfer Girl (1963)" version of a song Brian would go back to. Starts with a Italian sounding guitar intro before turning into a bouncy brass tune with Brian's vocals all over. Nice cut that was album worthy.
16. Be True to Your School (Mono single version): A long time concert staple that is good but MUCH better live.
17. Ballad of Ole' Betsy: Another deep cut. It's a ballad dedicated to an old card.
18. Little Saint Nick (Stereo Single Version): Nice stereo remix of a classic holiday tune.
19. Fun, Fun, Fun: It's good. Nothing else to say
20. Little Honda: Somewhat deep cut
21. Don't Worry Baby (2009 Stereo Mix): Done after the multi's were re-discovered. Beautiful and better than the original stereo mix by milles.
22. Why Do Fools Fall in Love (2009 Stereo Mix): Same as above.
23. The Warmth of the Sun: One of the band's best slow songs
24. I Get Around (with Session Intro-mono): Nice little piece of history that shows Brian producing the studio musicians before segueing into the finished song.
25. Wendy (2007 Stereo Mix): Better than the original. Noticeable for editing a cough out of the middle eight.
26. All Summer Long (2007 Stereo Mix): Really lively here compared to the mono mix.
27. Girls on the Beach: One of the deeper cuts and one that has really grown on me. There's some amazing harmony going on here.
28. Don't Back Down: Another great deeper cut.
29. When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) (2012 Stereo Mix): The harpsichord really stands out here.
30. All Dressed Up For School (Mono): Why oh why was this not on the Today! album instead of the interview? Great rocker.
31. Please Let Me Wonder (2007 Stereo Mix): Kinda like the 2012 mix better. This one is lively to a fault imo.
32. Kiss Me, Baby (2000 Stereo Mix): Nice stereo version of this great ballad
33. In the Back of My Mind (2012 Stereo Mix): Great stereo version of the Dennis Wilson ballad.
34. Dance, Dance, Dance (2003 Stereo Mix): Nice rocker done in stereo.
Disc 2:
1. Do You Wanna Dance (2012 Stereo Mix): Not as good in stereo as it is in mono due to some multis that are still missing.
2. Help Me, Rhonda (Mono Single Version): One of the band's biggest hits.
3. California Girls (2002 Stereo Mix): Man, this kicks serious butt in stereo. A must hear.
4. Amusement Parks USA (Early Version): Ugh, another "why is this here?" track. Not as good as the final but you do get to hear drummer Hal Blaine say ass!
5. Salt Lake City (2001 Stereo Mix): Nice stereo version of the deep cut.
6. Let Him Run Wild (2007 Stereo Mix): Again, a bit too lively here. The remastered stereo version from 2012 is better.
7. Graduation Day (Session Excerpt & Master Take, 2012 Mix): This is a real treat. Some nice chatter before the actually song comes on. Beautiful cover (Four Freshman again) that somehow didn't make the Summer Days album.
8. The Little Girl I Once Knew (Mono): The track that hints at Pet Sounds imo.
9. There's No Other (Like My Baby) (2012 "unplugged" Mix with Party Session Intro): Surprisingly good track here. There's some absolutely hilarious dialog before they go into the song (which has the chatter removed, more about that when I review "Party!") Like this song more now hearing it without the talking.
10. Barbara Ann (2012 Stereo Mix): Another live song staple. Everybody knows this one.
11. Radio Spot "Wonderful KYA" (Mono): Nice harmony but meh, could do without this.
12. Sloop John B (1996 Stereo Mix): Another one you know. The transition to the Pet Sounds feel is complete.
13. Wouldn't It Be Nice (2001 Stereo Mix): Best opener ever? It's possible.
14. God Only Knows (1996 Stereo Mix): One of the band's best. Top 5 for me easily and it should be in yours as well.
15. I Just Wasn't Made For These Times: Another top 5 for me. A deep cut that shouldn't be a deep cut.
16. Caroline No (1996 Stereo Mix): The closer to Pet Sounds.
17. Good Vibrations (Mono): Another top 5 song for me and arguably the band's top hit of all time.
18. Our Prayer (2012 "Smile Sessions" Stereo Mix): Nice stereo version of the 1966 cut of this track. Some vocals start a bit before the others though which can be jarring.
19. Heroes and Villains: Part 1 ("Smile Sessions" mix- Mono): The song reconstructed as Brian had originally intended the single to be.
20. Heroes and Villains: Part 2 ("Smile Sessions" mix- Mono): The "B side" of the single featuring mostly wordless harmonies.
21. Vega-Tables ("Smile Sessions" Stereo Mix): Previously an LP only track.
22. Wind Chimes ("Smile Sessions" Stereo Mix): Same as above.
23. The Elements: Fire (Mrs. O'Leary's Cow) ("Smile Sessions" Mix- mono): The infamous Fire track. Must be heard to be believed.
24. Cabin Essence ("Smile Sessions" Mix- Mono): This is in my personal top 5. Amazing song.
25. Heroes and Villains (2012 Stereo Mix): Heroes and Villains in stereo arranged like the mono version is on the SMiLE box set.
26. Wonderful (2012 Stereo Mix): The Smiley Smile version in Stereo.
27. Country Air (2012 Stereo Mix): From Wild Honey. Much better in stereo than mono.
28. Wild Honey (2012 Stereo Mix): A great rocker and yes, it sounds better in stereo.
Taking a little break here. Discs 3 and 4 coming very soon.
