I remember hearing on The Monday Night War by JR that when Bischoff took over he got rid of Jim Ross because he sounded too southern and his WCW didn't want to really be associated with that.
Someone explain why Mongo was an announcer then in the early Nitro days?
JR....full of crap?

I think it was just a case of Bischoff trying to appeal to a more nationwide audience.

Mongo McMichael doesn't get spoken about enough. I fully approve this thread.

Mongo was a celebrity color commentator.
Jim Ross was the voice of the company. Big difference.

Mongo, also in spite of being a Texan was a household name. He played in the NFL for nearly 15 seasons. People knew him for that rather than being "some hick". WCW towards the end was drifting further and further away from its southern base.

Mongo McMichael doesn't get spoken about enough. I fully approve this thread. I don't think you can get more southern than calling get athletes Ath-a-letes which he said a lot multiple times a week iirc

I think I'm the only person in the world who didn't think Mongo was that terrible. He was way better than Rob Bartlett (but who wasn't?) when Raw launched, and I thought his verbal altercations with Heenan were pretty entertaining.

Mongo was terrible, but dammit he put over the company and wrasslers like mad. He'd bumble through something and end it with "because this is the home of the best wrestlers on the planet today". He was a charming terrible. I found it hilarious how mean he was to Heenan, just because it made him come off like such a bully and he seemed blissfully aware.

Bischoff was full of shit. JR was one of many good people he foolishly discarded, who ironically would be used to obliterate WCW eventually.

JR has absolutely nothing to do with the WWF winning the Monday night wars and WCW's eventual implosion. I disagree. It might have been a relatively minor thing, but for the most part the WWF's announcers had a credibility to them when calling the action, even with over the top stuff like Lawler and his "puppies". Meanwhile over in WCW nobody was taking anything guys like Tony Schiavone or Mark Madden were saying seriously anymore and it impacted peoples perception of their product.

I thought the story was JR treated Bischoff like crap when he was his underling then fled in panic when Bischoff was promoted over his head rather than risk getting his comeuppance.
JR has done a great job selling the good ol' JR character, but a fair number of people he works along side seem to grow to despise him, Bischoff, Russo, Ferrara, even Vince himself, and the 'hates southerners' thing is always thrown out there as the reason but it's kind of hard to buy, I'm more inclined to believe JR is an ass if you work for him and have your own ideas.

But even assuming that's true, it still had nothing to do with WCW's demise. WWE commentary has been horrible for years and it's still doing just fine. As has been pointed out many times, WCW was killed by AOL Time Warner having no desire to broadcast wrestling on its networks. At the lowest points for both companies, Nitro's ratings were still higher than Raw's.

Yeah, all those guys Ross hired as head of talent relations during that era had nothing to do with WWE's successs. Give me a break.
