Does anyone remember those school book clubs? Basically, you'd be handed a flyer with a series of books on them, and then you'd take it home and you (or your parents) would then send out an order form that came in the flyer and take it back to school (with the required money) and a few weeks later you'd get books. I loved that and was a loyal "customer" from 3rd grade up through 7th grade. Anyone, i pointed that out because i found this: www.urlesque.com/2011/03/23/vintage-book-club-mailers/enjoy the nostalgia.

I was just thinking about these the other day. I remember I was really excited for whatever I had ordered once in 3rd grade, but the teacher forgot to send them in I occasionally find these books in used book and record stores, though and have most of my old ones

My school had the Scholastic ones when I went. I think they still do them.

We had a book club. You'd get tokens for good behaviour at school. If you gained enough, you could trade them for a book. It was awesome.

I loved those flyers. I would look over them for days tring to figure out what I was going to get.
When I got to middle school the Scholastic Book Fairs replaced the flyers. A Scholastic rep would come in (twice a year I think) and set up tables if books in our library. The book fairs were awesome.

Yeah, those were awesome. It always seemed to take forever for them to arrive.

I also remember these, and my parents did order quite a few books for me from them. I really liked those books, and still have fond memories to being excited when the teacher would pass them out to us.

The only book I remember getting was a book on Aliens and UFO's in the fourth grade. Came with a alien shaped eraser, which was neat.

We had something called a "Book Fair" and they'd have 3 massive trunks of books on display and we were able to pick what we wanted
It was cool

There used to be one those up here. Not sure if it was Scholastic... maybe there was a Canadian versoon of the company?
I was thinoing of it a little while ago, actually. One of the books I used to get was a big collection of comics, which ranged from kiddy stuff up to something I'd expect to see in Heavy Metal. I know I used to have at least 3 volumes of this and for the life of me I cannot remember what they were called.

I remember the book fairs. I remember getting yelled at for taking a book out of a stand and reading it before buying it.

They were wonderful! I always loved the back few pages having actual history books and music theory and everything else, so alongside a bizarre morality tale book involving some animal, something to do with Goosebumps, and a Roald Dahl novel, there'd be the Roman Empire... Ah, do they still have them? I really hope so but understand if they don't even if I fundamentally believe books are important I remember the book fairs. I remember getting yelled at for taking a book out of a stand and reading it before buying it. Sounds more like a Book Unfair.

I remember the Scholastic Book Club flyers. Used to order from them all the time and actually would always look forward to when they'd be handed out so I can see what they were offering. I can't remember what I ordered though. One I do remember was a book about different kinds of rocks and came with some, one was a volcanic rock.

I just saw a big Scholastic van in front of the grade school here the other day

i do remember them on more than one level. I remember getting them in grade school and loving them. But years later when I met my wife (in 2000) she, her father and her brother all worked at the very same company (Scholastic) that did all those book orders and book fairs. My father-in-law was in charge of the warehouse, my brother-in-law is in IT and my wife was in charge of producing all those monthly flyers you all remember from 2004-2009. I even worked there from 2001 to 2003, and I met the guy who introduced me into being an electrican (which I am today) there. And now my brother and his on-again-off-again wife work there too. My wife and father-in-law all left the company but her brother is still there. So that company impacted my life in more ways than one.
I for one can't believe it's still in business. But it's been around since the 1950's and it's survived TV, VCR's, video games and the internet this far. If they're still in business in five years I'll be surprised but I'm sure people said the same thing when TV came around. In fact, I drove passed their distribution center in Markham, Ontario the other day and they were putting a huge addition on to it. So they must still be making money.
They are an American company but for the Canadian guy a few posts ago that would be Scholastic as well. There was another one called "Gremlin" or something but it didn't last too long.
