There's a rich history between Steen and Zayn and most people know this (the fans at Full Sail certainly will), so I have no issue with playing that up.
What would be cool, though, is if they did it in a little bit of a different way than expected.
So instead of Steen laying out Zayn to cost him the title or laying him out after he wins the title, why not have Steen help Zayn win the title?
Zayn and Neville are in the midst of a hard-fought match, there's a ref bump and Neville nails Zayn with a tornado DDT. Zayn is dead to rights and Neville prepares for the Red Arrow, but Steen comes out unbeknownst to Zayn, pushes Neville off of the top rope, hits him with a package piledriver and leaves the ring. Zayn comes to, crawls over and wins the title and Steen comes back into the ring to celebrate with him.
Obviously, Zayn discovers what's happened and is furious with Steen. Steen plays it off saying that they came up together, they're finally in WWE together and need to look out for each other and that he knows Zayn would have done the same for him. Zayn wants to maintain their friendship, but tries to let Steen know in no uncertain terms that he doesn't need his help and intends to compete honourably.
Zayn grants Neville a rematch, but he beats him clean without any shenanigans.
So you go forth with a Steenerico alliance, but you firmly establish that Zayn is a babyface and Steen is a heel. Finally, you have Steenerico get a tag title shot against the Lucha Dragons. Steenerico finds themselves in a position to win the tag title if they can cheat, but Zayn refuses and they lose the match. Steen becomes incensed and destroys Zayn and thus begins their feud in earnest.
I really think that would work.

Having said that, another potential feud that I think would be interesting is Steen vs Breeze. Prince Pretty vs one of the ugliest bad asses to ever bad ass in an ugly manner. I don't know. I think Steen's pretty handsome myself. I'd love it, after he's established, he feuded with Breeze and ended up getting all the attention. WWE TV is really weird on this front though. Roman Reigns is the only guy they'll praise for his looks with any consistency and I think JBL even suggested Ziggler was horrifically ugly once. So I totally expect and, dread, the fat jokes. |

My conspiracy theory is similar with others here. I think they've been setting up a Steen debut alongside Zayn for a while. Neville is slowly burning toward heeldom. At some point, there will be all out hatred toward Neville and sympathy toward Zayn. In an interview, Zayn strongly hints he thought he had friends in dis bizness, but not anymore. At a future title shot, fey trickery abounds, yet, out of nowhere, Steen appears and cheats for an oblivious Zayn. The rest writes itself.
