So brets brother dies the night before survivor series 90 why didn't Bret go home? He wasn't main eventing, they couldn't get a replacement?
Its disturbing that he thought his match was more important than his family...

Because wrestling doesn't give a f*** about your personal life and according to Bret, Vince and Patterson were less than sympathetic when they heard Dean had died.
The way they saw it, you're here at the arena and your arms and legs are working, you're working tonight.
JCP threatened to fire Flair when he wanted to see his newborn kid at Christmas.

According to Bret, Stu told him to finish his commitments. He said that there was nothing Bret could do until the funeral anyway, and the old-school mentality was that you keep going on.

Yeah, I know we joke about Bret acting like he's Christ sometimes, but I don't think even he can raise the dead. Beyond that, though, he might not have minded at least having something else to occupy his mind for a night.

When I read his book, I thought I remember him saying he wasn't ready to go home, and wanted to do a match for a tribute. He was also planning on taking Bruce to Survivor Series to meet Vince and try to get him a position in the company.

Dean died the night before SS90 yes. His family told him there was nothing he could do, finish up his dates and then come home. Vince and Pat didn't know Dean had died and made an offhanded comment for Bret to cheer up, because he was acting like someone had died. He told them, but they weren't listening. Piper took it upon himself to mention on commentary Dean had died and Bret was dedicating the match to his memory.

I think Bret mentions in his book that Dean had conned him out of some money relating to a used car and the two became distant as a result. Not that this has much bearing on Bret wrestling at a PPV, I think the old school mentality took over.

Ya I figured it was because there was really nothing he could do. Just thought I'd ask.

Not that this has much bearing on Bret wrestling at a PPV, I think the old school mentality took over. Yeah before the car fiasco Bret idolized Dean, if that wasn't enough Dean even bought a car with the money Bret gave him, he compared Dean and Smith saying that both of them were worthless. The heartwarming part of the story is that Bret worked with Dibiase that night, and after the match both cried. Also Kerry Von Erich told Bret not to worry because his brothers were looking out for Dean in heaven.

I hate when people make judgments about things like this. We don't know what conversations took place within that family or why anyone reacts the way they do. I haven't read Bret's book but my first thought was that there is some explanation other than "Bret doesn't care about his family."

The one time someone should've come up to Bret with tears in their eyes, Patterson and Vince just yucked it up and left him feeling like crap.

Another thing to consider is that from what I understand, unlike other tragic Hart family incidents, Dean's death was expected for a long time wasn't it? Thus maybe the family was mentally preparing to deal with it for a while prior.

To be honest, people handle the loss of a family member is different ways. Some take some time out to mourn while others surround them with work. Who am I to judge anyway.

Going through with the match was kind of therapeutic for Bret. Bret and DiBiase worked it out to give themselves some extra time to work one-on-one at the end, which meant a lot to Bret.

Thus maybe the family was mentally preparing to deal with it for a while prior. He had Brights Disease I believe and his kidneys were barely functioning. Combine that with the fact that Dean did not take care of himself when they found out how bad it was and yes it was somewhat expected.

To be honest, people handle the loss of a family member is different ways. Some take some time out to mourn while others surround them with work. Who am I to judge anyway. I worked with a dude who had his cousin get gunned down in the street the night before, came to work the next morning. Then he starts apologizing about how he might not be in a good mood today, and told me about it. I tried to send him home but he wouldn't let me. He was obviously really broken up over it but he felt the most productive thing he could do that day was work. Different situation from Bret, especially on the financial level, but people really do handle things differently. No way in hell would I come to work if that was me in the scenario, but I don't judge them by thinking it's because they don't care or don't feel things as deeply as I do.

Why did Brett Favre play a football game the day after his father died? Probably because for that couple of hours he could just focus on something that completely gets his mind off of the sadness, I would imagine that it was somewhat similar for Bret....well that and the Hart's are psychos anyways.
