I think BP is great....outside of withholding cures for humanity's major diseases because....reasons.....? Come on, not even Doctor Doom is that big of a dick.... But that's like the only thing I have against him. He's one of my more favorite Marvel heroes, otherwise. Mileage may vary on that, I thought the reasons explained, although heavy-handed, made complete sense to how Wakanda was as a nation. They withheld cures because they felt all the West would do is distribute it to the highest bidder and tamper with it just to make a buck. I mean, there were totally other ways to handle that but eh... Again though, a part of me hoped Shuri would get the nod as BP for the MCU but that seems like a pipe dream on par with Monica Rambeau being the MCU Captain Marvel and not Carol Danvers.

They could have put out the cure itself and not the formula to it. Control how it got out.

Aside Ant-Man and Captain Marvel, it seems we aren't getting any of the alternate mantle holders for legacy characters.

To be honest, my favorite Captain Marvel (Marvel version) is Genis.
But man, you talk about a character that's backstory wouldn't lend itself to a movie right off the bat.

See, that's the problem with writing super-geniuses to me, you can't write someone who is smarter than you unless you're writing about technobabble. You're right, there are thousands of other ways to handle it to prevent businesses from having first grab, and Panther is a smart enough character that, if he were really interested in helping people outside of his own borders, he would have come up with at some point. Give it to Thor or Dr. Strange, both of whom have surgeon alter-egos and neither of whom have any real need for money. Give it to She-Hulk, who could use her legal knowledge to prevent businesses from patenting it and abusing the cure for a quick buck. Give it to any of the scientists who spent their lives researching ways to help people. Put it out themselves, they have all the resources and power to back up what they put out. And how does the holier-than-thou attitude really apply in a world where the West still cured polio, or did the iron lung industry have a much longer history in the Marvel world?
But really, the big problem with huge revelations like this is how the retcon affects everything that comes before it. It means that Panther and Wakanda did nothing as Captain Marvel laid there dying of cancer, so a man who saved millions couldn't be cured to continue to do so because of evil Western businesses?
On it's own, them being a slightly xenophobic isolationalist nation makes sense that Wakanda wouldn't succumb to outside influences, but in light of th efact that Panther is supposed to be a hero, when he could have saved far more people with a press release than he ever could with a mask it really damages the legacy of the character.

I think the Panther/cancer thing could've been handled better if it was some sort of fictional disease only known to the Marvel universe--maybe something like the Legacy virus or something. You could still tell the story you wanted that way, without rubbing people the wrong way.

I'm just wondering if this is an origin story or not. I'm guessing maybe not 100 percent one due to him showing up in the Civil War movie supposedly, but maybe some flashback stuff.

I think you could get through his origin pretty quickly via montage/narration. "The nation of Wakanda...ceremonial title of Black Panther..." and then get right to him kicking ass.

I really wish people that hate BP would stop reading Reggie Hudlin.
