My favorite Bruce Chen memory is unquestionably when the Red Sox nearly traded for Chen in September 2011 because they desperately needed a starting pitcher to start a potential one-game playoff against the Rays.

I think the best part of it all is that had they acquired Chen, he would not have been eligible for the team's postseason roster, so they quite literally would have made the move for one game only.

The Oakland Athletics are reportedly bringing back former coach Ron Washington in an effort to rein in one of the majors' worst defenses.

Multiple reports confirm that Oakland has hired Washington to assist with its infielders, particularly shortstop Marcus Semien, in a special-instructor role with the club. Jane Lee of MLB.com reports that the 63-year-old Washington, who's currently serving as an assistant coach at the University of New Orleans, will join the team for its series against Tampa Bay this weekend.

Washington will not be an on-field coach during play, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, but is expected to work with the team pregame.

The Athletics lead the majors with 43 errors - nine more than second-worst Milwaukee - while Semien's 15 gaffes pace all shortstops.

Washington, who abruptly stepped down as manager of the Texas Rangers in September after he admitted to cheating on his wife, has long been considered a top infield instructor at the big-league level.

He served as the Athletics' infield and third-base coach from 1997 to 2006, and was credited for his work with Miguel Tejada, Eric Chavez, and especially Scott Hatteberg, whom Washington helped convert from a catcher to first baseman.
