Now wait till they make The Silmarilion into a prequel to this... They don't have the rights for it. It's why the changed some of the backstory. That one would be too difficult even for Peter Jackson to bring to film.

Oh god, Stephen Colbert interviewed Smaug and it was hilarious.

Watched it last night. Certainly the best of the trilogy, and it has a neat Elrond and Saruman (and later Galadriel) vs. the Nazgul fight scene, which I enjoyed greatly.

just got back from the marathon showing, and that was a hell of a way to end the series. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}i'm sure some people are going to complain about Peter Jackson "choosing" ending two of the important storylines at the beginning of the movie instead of sticking to the book (that they haven't gotten around to reading yet, but probably will maybe read one day in the distant future but don't hold your breath) and i know there are going to be people bitching about the Aragorn reference that was shoehorned in (though i still liked it) concerning Fili... (double-spoilering because its not an outright spoiler, but some people might not want to know about it before hand) {Spoiler}{Spoiler}...i want someone to ask Peter Jackson if his line was a reference to Sons of Anarchy and i f***ing knew that how they were going to end the series {Spoiler}{Spoiler}old Bilbo is in his house, and there is a knock on the door. he yells he doesn't want any visitors, well-wishers or distant relations, and from outside Ganldalf asks about very old friends. over eight hours sitting in a theater should wear you out, but i'm trying to stop myself from firing up Fellowship right now

Just got back. A fun time, and that was a charming ending...but oh, man, that "love story" was a groaner. Imagine if every minute spent on that had gone to Beorn kicking ass. {Spoiler}Also, agree that the White Council vs. the Nazgul with DAT SAURON CAMEO is the coolest scene in the movie.

Wow, when they first announced that it was going to be three movies, I wondered how they were going to turn two movies into three that late into production, and restructure the acts, climaxes, etc. Turns out the answer was "Meh, just cut it somewhere, whatever, I don't care." The end of the second movie felt odd enough to me, and then this one starts without any kind of re-introduction/recap or anything, and Smaug is killed off within what, 10 minutes?

I figure they wanted a bleak cliffhanger to end the second one, which obviously meant Smaug was getting Saurumaned at the beginning of the third. Personally I'd have wrapped up the Smaug story at the end of the second and ended on the reveal of the Orc army. The third could have started with Bilbo and the dwarves finding Thorin beginning to lose his mind in the gold chamber.

Just got back from a showing. Really great and film and easily the best of the trilogy. Although... {Spoiler}I'm positive Peter Jackson was just trolling us with the eagles by this point

It's not like Beorn played a big role in the battle in the book. I thought it was the best of the trilogy, but still not up to par with any of the Lord of the Rings movies. Martin Freeman however, was the perfect Bilbo.

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies Short review: F*** this waste of film and ban Peter Jackson from ever touching a movie series again. Longer Review: WARNING: This will be ranty and disorganized, much like the movie itself. Also, minor spoilers, but nothing huge. {Spoiler}I was not a big fan of this movie. It has been one of the more blatant cashgrabs in folmdom. And while I don't mind the occasional cashgrab, I only ask that the slightest bit of effort is put into them.
This movie opens up with a cool sequence that would have been incalcuably better at the end of the last movie, which this movie only slightly beat out for worst in the series.
After that it builds to something that has potential, before just phoning it in with a battle of five armies that looks like it was animated by interns for college credit. Brilliant choice making the dwarves and orcs have the same armor, could definitely tell what was going on.
The battle in and of itself plays second fiddle to random duels far away, as an entire second army is held off by 6 people. By the time the deus ex machinas show up, you'll be asking yourself, "Why bother?"
Re the orcs. If you thought they made stormtroopers look competent in the last movie, get ready for, I shit you not, shovel-wielding women fighting off orc legions who were "bred for war."
Presented here is a quote summing up the whole problem. At one point, 4 dwarves are charging towards a boss battle, and some hell on toast looking goblins come over the wall.
"Goblin mercenaries, near a hundred of them." "You two go on ahead, we'll hold them off."
And they do, without a sweat.
Let me make one thing clear as well. There is death in this movie, but no one you would care about. Lots of red shirt elves and dwarves meet their end, and named characters walk around afterwards looking sad, but even when named characters die, they have so little development, there is no reason to care about them.
Meanwhile, they build up characters to die, that you want to see die, or redeem themselves, and nothing comes of it at all.
Let's also mention the schtick and slapstick. I know this is meant for a younger audience, but come on, you don't need to break any dramatic moment with a pratfall.
AND ENOUGH OF THE WINKS! If you groaned at Legolas looking at a picture of Gimli and all but winking at the audience, just you wait until you find out what he's up to at the end of the movie.
Frikkin Legolas is slightly nerfed from the last movie, but still must have hit his head sometime before Fellowship, because pointy dude's a damn Super Elf here.
In summation: It's a badly written low stakes movie presented as an epic. As the final entry in a series where the first 3 made me a massive fanboy, this movie delivered the coup de grace and finished off any love I had for the cinematic universe. Do not spend money on this movie even for the spectacle, just wait til it's on Netflix and hopefully has been edited down to one movie for time.

I liked it but it felt somewhat messy and rushed, It's as though he chopped time off the wrong film. AUJ: 2hrs 50mins DOS: 2hrs 41mins BOTFA: 2hrs 20mins "journey" didn't need to be as long as it was because yee gods that movies was dull as dishwater for the most part, "Smaug" I think was fine, "Battle" could have used an extra 15/20 mins at the end to tell cover certain things, it was "Battle over buy guys *Poof* back in the Shire" way too fast. Also {Spoiler}{Spoiler}The Killi/Tauriel romance was f***ing pointless in the end. That annoyed me. 7/10 or "Wait for the Extended Blu Ray"

All three of the Lord of the Rings movies stuck with me for weeks. The first Hobbit stuck with me for a few days. The second Hobbit movie at least stuck with me for a few hours (thanks to the ending). I was done with this one the second I walked out of the theater.
I thought it sucked. That scene with Suroman, Elrod and lady elf...that did me in. That scene sucked so bad. And the CGI was shit.

Better than the first, not as good as the second. I enjoyed all three Hobbit films but not one of them grabbed me in the way any of the LOTR trilogy did.
