Seriously, what the hell was up with this game?

I never got what was so controversial about Night Trap. I don't remember there being any gore or anything and the acting seemed deliberately over the top. Weird.

I'm assuming it was the whole home invasion angle that raised some eyebrows. The part I find amusing is that there were freaking senate hearings into games that look utterly tame in they're level of violence and graphic content compared to some of the most popular game franchises of today.

It was suppressed to be a piss take of 80s horror films but it sucked.

It was originally intended for a VHS-based gaming system that I don't recall ever coming out, and they just re-used the footage and built a skeleton of a game around it, to make it remotely acceptable on the Sega CD, which is much of why it plays like it does. That's why the clothing looks quite dated, the footage was years old by the time the game came out.

It's such bullshit that, if I recall, you seeing this means you cannot beat the game, since you can't leave the room and you can't trigger enough traps to succeed if you get stuck on this.

I could never get over the box art for both the American/European and Japanese Sega CD versions.

Just letting you know, the American and European box artworks are not different from each other except where the picture of those mercenaries was. I remember coming across the box of this at Blockbuster when I was little and I thought that the artwork looked rather cheesy and I was like "Huh?" I later realized that the artwork had a full picture and the girl was actually in her underwear. Here it is to see what I mean:

Now I will say that the Japanese artwork for the Mega CD (As how the console was referred to outside the US) was a little more unsettling:



Why I find this unsettling is the girl's eyes. The look on her face is just creepy.

And don't ask me why, but given the general purpose of this board I suddenly have images of how hilarious it would be to remake this game with WWE superstars trying to break into you're house in place of the guys wearing garbage bags.
