Inspired by conversation going on in the Hulk Hogan appreciation thread, what are some times you remember where wrestling told a really good story?
One of my favorite examples, which I seldom see mentioned, is the storyline from 1994 where Ted DiBiase claimed that Lex Luger had joined his Million $ Corporation. Of course, Luger denied this but DiBiase kept staging situations to make it look like Luger was one of his guys. Then, there was Tatanka who kept accusing Luger of being allied with DiBiase, when in the end it turned out to be Tatanka who was working for DiBiase instead of Luger.
In hindsight, this story made no sense whatsoever, but as a 15 year old I was completely pulled into it. If Luger had been employed by DiBiase, why would he deny it when DiBiase was bragging about it to the whole world. Also, what was the point of this ruse in the first place? If Tatanka was employed by DiBiase, why was he pretending not to be while accusing Luger of having turned? If the whole point was to hurt Luger, why not just attack him?
So yeah, I guess this story pretty much sucked. Regardless, I still liked it.

And I am contractually obliged to remind you that the Tatanka/Luger thing was really a commentary on the steroid trial.

Hogan vs. Andre. Just a great story of Andre overwhelming Hogan until the champ manages to claw back, bit by bit and eventually bring the giant down.

Piper vs. Bret Hart (WM8)
NOTE: For anyone who hasn't watched this match yet who is planning to seek it out, please remember to watch the promo that these two had together moments before their match. Don't worry, it doesn't spell everything out, if anything, it adds to the match's nuances and is a part of why it's considered a classic.

Especially in the match, where Piper had the opportunity to knock Bret out with the belt. Just great psychology at its finest. The more I see this match, the more you get out of it. Easily, Piper's best match.

Easily, Piper's best match. Yeah, I think Piper's run with the belt, albeit brief, was his best in-ring work. Defending champion Piper was just such a refreshing twist. His rematch against The Mountie was great and brought out one of my favorite moments of Vince on commentary ever. I'm not going to spoil what it is, you'll know it when you hear it.

Michaels and Flair during Flairs final match And the year and a half worth of storylines that spun out of that match, too. Quite possibly one of the richest feuds that WWE ever put together.

I really like Edge/Foley/Lita vs. Dreamer/Funk/Beaulah at One Night Stand 2 for the storytelling. The promo to set it up was great, Mick Foley realizing about thirty seconds after getting punched in the eye from Terry Funk that "this wasn't a good idea, I don't wanna be here" and trying to get out of there, after spending the whole month prior on a totally insane tirade against ECW. The whole gnashing of Terry Funk's eye with his beautiful selling ("MYYY EYYYYE, DON'T DO IT MICK!"). The fitting moment near the end where Foley and Funk wind up laying in each others' arms in a bed of barbed wire all scarred and burned. The ending is such a picture perfect character moment for sleazeball Edge, when he catches Beaulah tending to a knocked out Dreamer, who realizes she f***ed up leaving herself vulnerable for Edge's spear. Edge jacknife pins her like a real perv and then I absolutely love the ref who hesitates to count because Edge is being such a prick, makes the count anyways but the whole time he's still shouting "WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU", just disgusted, as if by counting the pinfall he's an accomplice.

The simple yet effective way Ric Flair would take on a young guy on TBS, beat him pillar to post for 10 minutes, but that guy will not quit. Kid comes back and beats up Flair to the point he takes his belt and leaves. I seen Flair do this with Jay Youngblood 30 years ago and the formula still holds up today. Ric made a bunch of guys into main event contenders that way. Then, you'd pay to see them at the arena have a full 60 minute match.

Raven vs Dreamer in my opinion is the most well done storyline. Raven played the heel role perfectly while Dreamer was awesome as the face in peril.
I love how a great deal of Raven's attacks on Dreamer (and later Sandman) were mental instead of physical. Great angle because it not only got both of them more over but also incorporated and entangled other storylines and got others over as well.
Not to mention that they constantly booked Dreamer coming so close to beating Raven but always having the victory taken from him at the last second.

Jimmy loves Lacey in RoH.
It's the typical "boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy struggles and struggles to get girl, boy gets girl, boy realizes that his victory failed to make him happy, boy teams up other outcasts, boy hangs his enemies and paints himself with their blood" story that's been done 100 times before, but it worked.

HHH vs. Shawn Michaels at Summerslam 2002.
Masterfully done. The returning legend facing off with his former best friend who, in the time Shawn was away from the ring due to injury, became the top star in the company. There was doubt as to whether Shawn could be as good as he once was, especially against someone the caliber of HHH - yet he more than showed he belonged back at the top.
Top story, told through both the in-ring work of Shawn and HHH and JR and King on commentary. One of the finest pieces of work the WWE has ever done.

As great as Hart-Austin at WrestleMania XIII is on its own merits, it is even better if you read Bret's recounting of the match in his autobiography. Bret talks about how he envisioned the scene from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" where McMurphy is trying but is ultimately unsuccessful at lifting a sink to break out of the asylum so he can watch the World Series. You really see that when Austin makes that last attempt to power out of the Sharpshooter before passing out. Amazing they went that long with Dreamer constantly losing for years (albeit, with shenannigans involved) before finally winning. Although it helps that Dreamer won a lot of spin off feuds from the main feud such as his feud with Brian Lee to keep from looking like an incompetant jack ass.

The NWO storyline, from it's inception to about September '97. From "The Outsiders" coming to take over, Hulk Hogan with the biggest turn ever, BIschoff becoming a tyrant, and being so bad that even Bobby the Brain Heenan had to side with teh good guys.
