It would be helpful to at least read up on the storyline to understand what's happening.

I jumped in to Black Flag and had no problems. Then went back and played Assassins Creed III. Just remember assassins vs templars, assassins good templars bad.

I played the first installment of two. I just started playing 3.
I don't give a crap about modern hoody dude, and hate with a passion every time he is on screen. But the actual game has a self contained story that works well on its own.
But screw Desmond, no one gives a crap about him.

I jumped into Black Flag and for the most part I got by OK. It was only when it shifted to the real world that I got a bit confused with what was happening (and annoyed... I want to pillage ships, explore islands and swing my sword around. Not walk around a boring office block talking to boring people). But mostly, I managed ok.

I've played all of them except the first one (hated it) and can pretty much tell you that you wouldn't be missing anything if you jump in. The Desmond sections aren't that frequent in 2 and 3 and Black Flag only has a couple of the office sections. The stories in the past are pretty insulated unless you're really into connecting it all together.

Evil company kidnaps dude who is related to lineage of assassins and whose distant relatives fought templars.
Honestly, I'm not sure many people play it for the framing device.

The real deal with Assassin's Creed is that it's Ubisoft's franchise.
It's in its early 40s, is unmarried, and currently resides in Montreal. Thanks for writing

I would try to play a bit of AC2 at least, because the game changed quite a bit from the first to second.... there have been changes to the game since them, but they stay mostly true to AC2's formula.
You won't be hopelessly lost jumping right in... but even though it's out of canon, I'd probably start with Unity before Black Flag. Reason why, Unity is more of a classic AC game. Black Flag's focus on naval combat turned off a LOT of people, even hardcore AC fans, if you tried it first.. it might turn you off to the franchise itself.

That's why I didn't finish the first one, really. As soon as it would get going, it would go back to Total Recall. I just wanted to be a ninja From what I've read online it seems very few people actually seem to enjoy the modern day segments of the games. They should just scrap the modern day concept and have each game a stand alone story set in a different period tying in slightly to another battle between the assasins and Templars rather than having the modern day nonsense. Plus, with Black Flag, it kinda killed my immersion of the game and characters since I was essentially playing a video game where I was a guy playing a video game.

I played every game up to Black Flag and gave up. Didn't like the ship battles and didn't like where the story went when you were out of the Animus. The older ones are fun, but the overall story drags with a tiny bit at the end of each game building on the story, so you can read up and get the story. But if you like the gameplay, then go back and play the old ones too, you can get them fairly cheap these days.

But screw Desmond, no one gives a crap about him. Honestly, as much as I enjoyed Black Flag I missed the Desmond sections. Nameless, faceless Abstergo Entertainment employee doesn't interest me.

But, wouldn't you prefer an Assassin game without the Animus crap? No computers, just assassinations? Nope, not at all. I like the framing story as it offers a nice contrast to the historical stories. Hell, I wouldn't be opposed to an entirely modern-day AC game.

All right, I just beat AC3... I probably could have used the time playing it better.

The Desmond sections were at their best in Brotherhood and III. Because Desmond was doing Assassin-y stuff in them. And I liked the banter between Desmond and Lucy when they're trying to get into Ezio's old villa in the beginning of Brotherhood.

I'm on one of the last missions of AC: Unity so I'm not sure if they take you out of it then... but, one upside is there's no modern-day animus moments. You start as if you're at a menu screen, then jump into the game.... there are parts that remind you it's a simulation and there are moments when a voice will talk to you about rifts in time... but they end up being cool little platforming areas that take you to different time periods. So you spend the entire game as Arno and not walking around Abstergo or waiting for people to say you can jump in the Animus and continue playing the game.
