Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander are no longer the starter pokemon of Red and Blue. I've chosen three random pokemon (with the help of random.org) as the new starters (no evolved forms, obviously).
Who do you choose!?!?

Well Caterpie is just asking for trouble, and Zapdos is pretty much cheating.
So I guess Jigglypuff. Sing will make it easy to catch new Pokemon, at least.

Would Zapdos start at level 1 instead of 5 just to make things a little more even?

Zapdos, just since I could easily catch the others . Though, I'd love a Jigglypuff, even if you know those giant eyes have to be weird in person.

Caterpie
I never like legendaries and even after I catch them I never use them. Jigglypuff I've never been a fan of.

Other. I'll go out in a patch of tall grass with a stick, a pokeball, and a pocket full of hope and catch the first wild animal to attack me.
Like a champion.

If this is the first generation, he still has the Bide TM, so it's just a war of attrition, debuffing him when he is charging and wasting turns.

Caterpie will at least evolve into something somewhat useful in the early game, after which point I'll have probably caught something more conducive anyway. It's not like you're gunning for the Elite 4 right out of Pallet Town.

I guess Jigglypuff's main selling point is Sing, if you get lucky, since sleep provides a hefty bonus to your chance of catching a pokemon, so you can build a team a little quicker. It doesn't get Fairy type in generation 1, so you basically have an inferior Clefairy. Granted, Jigglypuff's line is always in Clefairy's shadow, for stuff like Magic Guard, etc, being so good, but it at least has dual types later and Hyper Voice, so it's not pure shit.

Caterpie. I always evolved Caterpie into Butterfree and wrecked shit with it.
