Today we learned the new list of films added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. 25 films were added this year. Some of the other big films added include Spielberg's epic Saving Private Ryan, horror classics House of Wax and Rosemary's Baby, the classic Pixar short Luxo, Jr., and Howard Hawks's classic western Rio Bravo. I nominated some of these and am happy to see them added.
Here is the full list:
1. 13 Lakes (2004) 2. Bert Williams Lime Kiln Club Field Day (1913) 3. The Big Lebowski (1998) 4. Down Argentine Way (1940) 5. The Dragon Painter (1919) 6. Felicia (1965) 7. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) 8. The Gang’s All Here (1943) 9. House of Wax (1953) 10. Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport (2000) 11. Little Big Man (1970) 12. Luxo Jr. (1986) 13. Moon Breath Beat (1980) 14. Please Don’t Bury Me Alive! (1976) 15. The Power and the Glory (1933) 16. Rio Bravo (1959) 17. Rosemary’s Baby (1968) 18. Ruggles of Red Gap (1935) 19. Saving Private Ryan (1998) 20. Shoes (1916) 21. State Fair (1933) 22. Unmasked (1917) 23. V-E Day + 1 (1945) 24. The Way of Peace (1947) 25. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

I still don't know what the National Film Registry is supposed to be. A film HOF? Because I'm pretty sure that films are going to be preserved no matter what, considering they're intellectual property that exists in many forms already.

Now that we live in an era of digitized files, it doesn't really serve the same purpose. Back in the days of old nitrate film stocks when films physically had to be preserved was one thing, but now it's not really the same. It's nice to see a movie deemed to be culturally significant though.

Pretty much. It's only been around since 1988. I'd actually prefer if they pour their support into preserving those old nitrate films. Any time they find an old film, it's pretty exciting stuff.

So the film that has Paris Hilton's head get chopped off is now in there which means she's is a part of the National Film Registry.

People were allowed to submit choices? Yes. You can nominate a list of 50 films per year via email or traditional mail. Films must be American (or at least an American co-production) and at least ten years old. Films don't have to be feature length or theatrical, but can be shorts, serials, newsreels, television films, etc. Here is where you can find more information. www.loc.gov/programs/national-film-preservation-board/about-this-program

Is voting open year round or only during a certain period?
