So now that we are apparently opening up relations with Cuba after 50 years, I find myself asking-why haven't we ever had an evil, America hating Cuban as a heel in wrestling? Where the Russkies just easier to lampoon?

The Bario Brothers: Fidel Sierra and Ricky Santana I want to say had the Cuban gimmick at first. Fidel Sierra himself had The Cuban Assassin gimmick for awhile too.

Could Razor Ramon count since he was basically a Tony Montana rip off to begin with?

There is the Cuban Assassin of Stampede Wrestling Fame and Fidel Sierra who was the more well known Cuban Assassin in the United States.

Isn't hating on American promotions basically Konnan's gimmick these days?
Seriously though, I think the reason there were so few evil Cubans is that Cuba was never a real threat to America, just a minor nuisance because it had no real influence there unlike the rest of it's neighbors. A communist Cuban heel would likely work well in front of select crowds in Florida and get meh responses in the rest of the country and could potentially even get face pops on overseas tours.

All they could afford was Dominicans, and they couldn't make the crepes right.

I think it might be the opposite. People who were alive during the Cuban Missile Crisis might have found the whole thing scarier and closer to home than lots of other stuff, which made them less likely to want to go back there even years later.

As opposed to those militarized Canadians?

Could Razor Ramon count since he was basically a Tony Montana rip off to begin with? I'm pretty sure he was billed as Cuban when he debuted. If you count Yokozuna as Japanese or Nikolai Volkoff as Russian, then you can definitely count Razor as Cuban.

Cubans other than Castro and his regime were never really seen as enemies of Americans. In fact, Cubans who fled to America were pretty successful in establishing their own community and version of American patriotism. They're become an influential group that politicians have tried to cater to for years.
A Fidel sympathizer would get over in Florida, but even by the 70s or so, the old guard that lived through the Revolution and had that hostility was dying out.

My question is...have we ever had any heel Australians? Plenty, though the line between Australia and New Zealand gets blurred a little in pro wrestling. Bill Dundee has been a heel quite often.

Also, Konnan was born in Cuba. Also, Gustavo Mendoza was a heel in Mid-South/UWF.

One would think with the Australian/American War there would be more gimmicks. Every time I see a vet with boomerang shrapnel I get emotional.
