I am a big fan of wrestling punches.
What is a wrestling punch?
A "fake" punch. A "fake" punch which differs from fake movie punches in that the wrestling punches actually connect. A wrestling punch is a worked punch which requires skill to strike the opponent in the head with a fist without causing damage, other than a slight sting (unless Vader is throwing the punches). Lance Storm once said he would let Hulk Hogan punch his kid, his punches were so safe.
Of course wrestling punches are unrealistic. In a brawl between, say, Triple H and The Undertaker, in which they throw around 50 bare fisted punches into each others faces... well you couldn´t do that in real life. Where are the black eyes and split lips? Why do they only see to punch each other above the ear?
None of this matters however as wrestling punches are quick and sharp attacks and the selling of the punches makes them look like a million bucks.
Some of the best punchers in recent history would be Triple H, Foley, Rock, Austin, and of course Undertaker. I absolutley loved when Austin/Rock/HHH would do that "trading punches" spot. Watch the Rock Austin WM17 Limp Bizkit promo, wherein Austin and Rock piss each other off by crashing their beers against one another and then start hitting each other. Awesome.
However sometimes wrestling punches can look silly. When a wrestler just lets the other guy grab his head with one hand and then just waits for his opponent to strike him with the other. Why don't they block? Are they Rocky Balboa?
I think it was CM Punk and maybe Undertaker who occasionlly added a "blocking stance" into their matches. They might be knocked back into the corner and if they were taking a lot of punches they'd put their guard up in a vague blocking attempt which heightened the realism.
Would you like to see more blockking of punches in WWE matches?
I also recall a match between Kurt Angle and Undertaker. It was on Smackdown when Taker was still a biker. It was brilliant, I think it was ruined when maybe Lesnar interfered at the end, but it was great. Anyway, it was very technical and no punches were thrown and then suddenly 15 minutes in Taker dropped Angle with a right hand out of nowhere. It made the right hand seem like a huge move.
Would you like punches to be used less? This would make wrestling more realistic and also make the punch a bigger move.
In conclusion, wrestling punches are terrific. Apart from Big Show's KO punch. I hate that. Why doesn't he just hit it straight away?
