When exactly did Bret start doing this? He was already doing it in 1990 when i started watching. Also, were the fans who got the glasses plants or real fans?

They were given to kids as a way to mask the tears in their eyes, at the sight of Bret

Anvil used to take them off for him and just pitch them into the crowd. Bret hopping down to do it would have been sometime in the 90s.

I could be completely making this up in my head, but I could have sworn I read somewhere the first time he handed the glasses to a kid, it was actually one of his own relatives in the front row and, being a singles match without Neidhart around, he handed them to the child relative for safekeeping. When he got back to the back after the match, someone thought it was a nice touch and suggested he start doing it every match, with real fans.

He did give them to his son, but it would have been much later. Still isn't to say how this happened, but despite what he charges for them on his website, they're pretty cheap, he can't have wanted to save them that badly. Your story is good though, so I'll believe that.

If I remember correctly, they weren't exactly 'sunglasses' but a sheet of tinted plastic that was cut to vaguely sunglass-like shapes.

The ones Bret wore always looked different to the ones that were mass produced - a bit more substantial than the mylar with sponge trim and cheap rubber hose, as you described. My cousin had a pair too and it didn't seem to be as the same product Bret wore but more a cheap, mass-produced replica

I dont know when he started doing it I just remember seeing it on superstars. I also know that I wanted Bret to give me the glasses if I ever went to a WWF event.

It's such a cool thing for a wrestler to do. Bret has always been so good to fans. Definitely one of the nicest wrestlers I've ever met

It's clear that the kids he was giving them to were not plants because sometimes they stuck their tongues out or made other ungrateful faces. Of course those kids could have been planted by the Hulkster to undermine Bret.

Did it ever bother anyone else that he always he gave them out to kids who could afford front row tickets? Those brats have enough already, Hitman.

I remember when Hurricane had a second mask with him and he gave it to a kid but Ric Flair took it away from the kid, Was priceless and classic heel move.

The merchandise catalog versions go for fairly high prices on ebay. I sold one missing a circular piece on the side and it still went for around $40 or so.
He did, and still does, care about his character and his fans. This is very evident by the sunglasses giveaway and how he would go throughout the crowd shaking hands and even signing fan posters.
