It's hard to say what he's best known for, but he was in a ton of well-known movies going back to the seventies. I think of Intolerable Cruelty where he had a comedic role. I also think of him playing FDR in Annie. He got to work with many famed directors like John Huston, Martin Scorsese, Warren Beatty, Woody Allen, Oliver Stone, and the Coen brothers.

Oh no! He's done so much stuff all over film and TV, but the first thing that came to mind is all the voice over work he did on so many History Channel & PBS documentaries over the years. He had such a perfect voice for history docs... 2014............ GO. AWAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!RIP, Mr. Hermann.

The mom in "The Lost Boys" should have accepted his offer.
Would have been the coolest vampire family ever.
Who wouldn't want a vampire Kiefer Sutherland as a son?

I just finished watching Gilmore Girls, one of the many highlights of the show. His love for Yale on that show was hilarious and his banter back and forth with Kelly Bishop seemed authentic and very caring

That would be the natural headline for Alex Winter, but Carlin deserved much better. That would be like if Tarantino died and they said, "Little Nicky actor passes away."

If History Channel ever did a tribute with all the docs he voiced over, they'd be on the air for days. Honestly, that is what I will remember most, although his regular acting career is so long, you could mention half a dozen roles and still only scratch the surface.
Going out on a limb here - aside from Robin Williams, this is the hardest loss for me in 2014 in terms of Hollywood.

Loved him as Richard Gilmore. He was also great in one of my favorite M*A*S*H episodes (as a surgeon who cracks under the pressure).
