In 2011, Rey Mysterio beat the Miz in an eight man tournament to become WWE champion. Of course, Scumbag Cena would beat on lil rey rey further, and win it back, leading to Punk-Cena II. But, suppose Punk had stayed away for longer. How would you book Mysterio's title reign?

That would've been a big draw, Cena vs Mysterio, the kids would've payed to watch that. Obviously Cena wins, then Punk comes back.

Mysterio wins the title, but like Punk, he also leaves the WWE.
Vince scrambles in panic, has a third title belt made, and just hands it to Cena.

I wouldn't have had the tournament at all.
I would have positioned the World Heavyweight Champion as the new top dog of the company for a few months until Punk returned and challenged the WHC to a unification match.

It couldn't be any worse booked than his actual title reign where he lost every single week.

I would book it the same as the WWE did.
I had no interest in seeing a Cena/Mysterio feud, and had no problems with Punk returning as early as he did, as he was pretty much the only good thing they had going on Raw at the time.

For everyone saying that they would have had the Cena/Mysterio at SummerSlam, when would you have had Alberto Del Rio cash in his MITB?

Mysterio wins the title, pulls off his mask, and it's CM Punk underneath.

If I booked it?
Okay, Cena comes out after the title win and challenges Rey. Rey accepts, the match starts. Solid match with Cena looking strong, moments from losing, Rey delivers a low blow causing the DQ. The next week Rey is conflicted, he is champion but only by getting himself disqualified. He apologies to the WWE Universe and says he will defend the title the next week on RAW against Cena.
Cut to next week's RAW. The main event is set, Rey Mysterio vs John Cena for the WWE Title. When both superstars are in ring, they get their "champion and challenge" introductions. The bell rings. Suddenly four lucha, masked wrestlers approach the ring from all sides. Both Rey and Cena are confused. As they are about to enter the ring, Cena and Rey stand back-to-back, ready to fight the four masked men.
SWERVE!
Rey turns on Cena, dropkicking him in the back and all five lucha-libre wrestlers beat Cena down. All five of them pose and RAW ends.
Next RAW, Rey and his new stable come out. Rey goes all heel, insulting the fans and blaming them for disrespecting mexican wrestling. They are called something like "The Masked Revolution" or something like that.
Rey gets a four month title run, with his stable helping him cheat at PPVs.
He eventually loses the title to Cena to end the storyline, setting up for CM Punk's shock return.
Then poochie flies away to his home planet but dies on the way.

Two of the biggest, true to the word, babyfaces who hadn't really had a program with one another. God forbid they'd have the kiddies choose between them. Exactly- and that's really the worst part- because they could have gotten a Summerslam main out of Cena/Mysterio, but they blew that dream match off on Raw. So, my answer: Mysterio holds it to Summerslam. Cena/Mysterio happens. Rey Mysterio pulls off the win- but Alberto Del Rio (who still hated Rey) comes in and cashes in on Rey after he topples Cena. ADR attacks Rey- then CM Punk makes his return after ADR cashes in. Night of Champions is Alberto Del Rio vs. CM Punk for the unified title. The Miz takes exception to Rey beating him, so Awesome Truth takes on Rey and Cena at NOC, then win. Triple H has to ally with Cena as the bigger fish, so Awesome Truth still win- and suddenly, you have a perfect reason for Cena to go with the biggest fish possible in The Rock (since now, he's lost two straight to them and NEEDS The Rock's help.)

The weight of the championship injures Rey.
New new tournament the next week on Raw.

Mysterio wins the title, pulls off his mask, and it's CM Punk underneath. Oh my God, this would have been amazing. The build up. Cena swearing it's CM Punk, but everyone else tells him he's crazy. He's announced and called as Rey Mysterio. Just amazing. The only way that could be better if the unmasking was done by Juan Cena.

Although the prospect of Punk runing the ending and then Cena-Punk-Mysterio match at Night of Champions with three men who can lay claim to the title would be a cool way to bring prestige to that event. It's a shame we never got Rey-Cena or Cena-Hardy on a huge stage.

For everyone saying that they would have had the Cena/Mysterio at SummerSlam, when would you have had Alberto Del Rio cash in his MITB? After Hell in a Cell. Then Truth and Miz attack, adding to more of the chaos.

Cena beating Rey later on that night is just as bad as Orton beating Christian after he won the WHC.
Actually, didn't that happen around the same time? Crazy.

Triple H comes out and says the winner of the tournament will face Cena for the vacant title since Cena should have been in the tournament in the first place.
