I saw it the other day and, while it's not my favourite Paul Thomas Anderson film, I really enjoyed it and thought Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin were terrific. That said, it's not for everybody. The plot is purposely overwrought and convoluted (Phoenix's character is perpetually high and the viewer is meant to be in his daze, too) and it can be hard to follow at times. I think it's not unfair to say that the sum of its parts is greater than the whole. And for anybody who has seen it, a question: {Spoiler}{Spoiler}Is Sortilege (Joanna Newsom's character) actually there or just a hallunication of Doc's?
You never see her interact with anybody but him.

Great performances. It's fun to watch them all. That said, the movie has a complicated plot and I'm going to have to watch it again to better understand all the threads of the movie. It kind of reminded me of a Raymond Chandler novel or a complicated film noir mystery movie. I did enjoy watching it for the most part, but not as much as did all the other PTA movies. Right now I might call it my least favorite PTA film, though I'm definitely going to watch it again and my opinion could change. I have no idea about the answer to your spoiler question.

My biggest disappointing movie of 2014. It was a chore to watch and even if you can keep up with the plot, the plot wasn't very interesting at all. It's a movie that's confusing for the sake of being confusing to hide the fact nothing really happens, lack of exciting scenes, lack of interesting characters, or lack of interesting memorable dialogue. I know he's a stoner and it's suppose to be dazed and hazy but they missed the mark of why should I bother and care.

I read the book a few years ago. Sounds like the movie is a faithful adaptation. I plan on seeing it at some point in the week.
