It really did happen. Not figment of a feverish Vince Russo's imagination. Chris Sabin defeated Bully Ray for the TNA world title. He may held it for a month and won the title due to massive interference, but it still counts. Sure after Ray won back the title, Sabin went back to status quo. Sure he became Fail Sabin. Sure he became the Merc Mero to Velvet Sky's Sable. Yeah, him and Austin Aries traded the X Division title like rappers trade a jumpoff. So what he left TNA months after this victory. But in the record books, Chris Sabin is a world champion.

Was after he lost the title I stopped watching TNA. Not because he lost but because it's TNA.

I think he's better off where he is right now to be honest. I'm still waiting for a MCMG reunion on the indies, to no avail. I wonder why they haven't? They've both been on the same show numerous times.

It could have worked if they had:
1. Built Sabin up more before he won the title. Keep in mind, he had been back on TV for like two months after spending his entire career as a X-Division/Tag guy. Book him strongly for several months then give him the title.
2. Not had his actual title win come off like a complete fluke where Sabin clearly didn't deserve to win.

Im still laughing at how virtually his entire run consisted of him laying around and getting his ass kicked.

It shouldn't have happened... but not because he didn't deserve a shot. As mentioned above, he hadn't been built up for it yet, and the end result was an "out of nowhere" win that had no place to go, especially given that the obvious plan all along was to make sure Bully Ray was champion going into Bound For Glory so AJ could challenge him.
They could've done a perfectly solid job of putting Sabin over by having him give Bully a real, legitimate challenge, but just coming up short; they could've booked the match so that something was being done to keep Aces and Eights away from the ring, allowing Sabin to gain an advantage, and only have him lose when one of the members found some kind of trick to get in or sneak a weapon to Bully. Hell, do an angle where they attack Sabin before his match, have him sell an injury, fight like hell, but come up short once Bully can exploit the injury; dude had come back from enough knee surgeries that making that pivotal to the match's story would've worked fine.
As it was, he won...and they had no clue what they were going to do with him, so he went nowhere, and the reign meant nothing. Bully had to have the belt back on him before October, so it was never going to amount to much. MAYBE it could've worked if they used it as a chance to develop Sabin's character more; for example, Sabin could've sold his knee injury, but insisted on defending the title as often as possible regardless, despite Velvet or whomever telling him to stop and heal up. You'd create a character who is tough and dedicated, but who clearly has an insecurity about being perceived as vulnerable or injury-prone, and then build to him dropping the title due to these character tweaks, maybe refusing help from others even if they're just offering to keep Aces and Eights from interfering in the rematch with Bully or whatever. As it was, they basically just played him off as a fluke champion, so it did him no favors.
Wrestling companies need to learn that there's actually something to be had in allowing guys to lose, even lose cleanly, but look strong in the process. Did any of us watch WK9 last week and think Okada came off badly for losing to Takahashi? It has to happen sometimes; defeat in a tough, even match can just make the crowd want a guy to get the big win down the road THAT much more (so long as you don't abuse it ala WCW holding off on giving Luger the belt back in the day).

I love how much you have to qualify the statement "Chris Sabin is a former TNA World Heavyweight Champion" for it to accurately reflect reality.

I recall the original bound for glory plan was:
Bully vs Hogan
heel Sabin vs Styles
Storyline wise, both would have made sense at the time. But then Hogan not getting cleared, his departure, Angle's DUI etc.

Does he even wrestle anymore? Yes. Watch PWG's Battle of Los Angeles. Not specifically for Sabin, even though he's on it, just because everyone should watch BOLA.

My assumption is that Shelley is too busy (and making too much money) as part of the Time Splitters in Japan right now to really consider a Motor City Machine Guns reunion as worth it.

It's a shame his win and 'run' were booked as terribly as they were. He could've had an interesting couple months.

If Austin Aries winning the championship is a high point in terms of excitement as far as the TNA championship goes, Sabin winning was the opposite.

Chris Sabin is one hell of a wrestler, so naturally that means he should be jerked around his entire career and never really move up the card like he deserves until the very end, where he gets a useless placeholder run after sitting around for a good while, gets booked like a joke and then disappears.
That is some five star TNA.

That is some five star TNA. Good as he is, he never should have sniffed the World Title, IMO. He is a perfect tag guy, good (not great) X Division guy and would have made a fine TV/midcard champion but never the World Champ and they were right, IMO to make him a joke. Him mistreating Velvet and looking like a fool was the best solo work he had in TNA.

Him mistreating Velvet and looking like a fool was the best solo work he had in TNA. Zod that storyline was so horrible. Sabin was the emotionally and verbally abusive boyfriend, which can work when you put good writing around that, TNA didn't do that. Aries was the one coming to Velvet's aide, because she was hot and that's what she needed to be, nevermind that this is the same guy who stuck his crotch in Christy Hemme's face. Velvet threatens and breaks up with Sabin, not because he's an emotionally and verbally abusive boyfriend, but because he lost a wrestling match. TNA made the perfect storyline to make us hate all 3 characters.
