So I look up stuff on Netflix that interest me to a point, but I have noticed that certain things get rated too high or too low. For example, I noticed "Trainspotting" on Netflix and that was given an average rating of one star. I was like "What?" Same with "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and that, too, has a one-star average rating. I know that the ratings are based on personal opinions of viewers, and tastes vary in people, but somehow I don't think that I should rely too much of the average rating. For starters, "I, Frankenstein" has a four-star average rating. I haven't seen it, though I've heard a lot of negativity surrounding it. Though if some people liked it, that's fine.
I'm just curious what you think about the votes that are given upon rating the shows or movies on there.

I don't really trust the ratings anywhere when it comes to movies. Tivo has something similar where it rates movies and shows and they're rarely even remotely reasonable.

If they gave Star Trek: The Next Generation one star then I don't trust their ratings.

Naw.
Pretty much anything with a built in rating function is useless.
I give it more credit than I do, say, the shit on XBL (were you aware every game ever was at least a four star affair?), but there's plenty of fluffing going on from somewhere.

First, I'm pretty sure that it shows you star ratings based on what you've already rated. I don't think there is a general star rating.
Second, your system must be screwed up, because TNG is rated 5 stars for me and I, Frankenstein has 1 star. Or maybe it just thinks based on your prior ratings that you'll hate TNG and love I, Frankenstein?
Generally 3-4 stars are little indication of whether I'll like something, but 1-2 and 5 are usually right on.

Basically, if you do rate a number of movies, there will be two listings rated. The top one is the rating Netflix thinks you'll give it based on prior ratings, and the bottom one is the average rating based on all Netflix users. But since you don't rate anything, it'll only show the average rating. As for the ratings themselves, they were fairly accurate at one point, but a couple of months ago they changed it (I think by integrating Facebook), and now they're all out of whack, to where over half the things in my queue Netflix thinks I'll give 4.5 stars or higher.

I'm to the point in life whenever I see a really high rating on a new show/game/movie I just assume it's 100% Paid For Bullshit.
Doesn't mean it's bad, just means a lot of ratings are based off what you paid to get rated.

it's funny my parents shared account has no idea how to rate anything... because of their wildly different taste in movies...

They have since... but the first account is still messed up from it

I don't even know how to rate movies. Even if I did I wouldn't.

Walking Dead had a low rating on there a couple weeks ago. A show that literally everyone I know, including my parents who are senior citizens watches. I honestly think a lot of the ratings on there are from trolls.

little known fact: the ratings are based on what Netflix thinks you would personally rate it.
to make it more accurate take the time to rate stuff as you go past it if you've seen it before or after you watch it on there.
makes the experience so much more enjoyable the more you use it, I've rated so much now, give or take the odd anomoly it's scary how spot on it is with how many stars it thinks i'd give things. it seems to know my taste in tv and film much better than I do

The same goes for my brother's profile (account is under his name), and he doesn't use our account anymore (pretty sure he uses his gf's).

I never trust the ratings for anything, really. I have my own unique likes and dislikes that I like to determine on my own. I might check out other opinions, but I don't allow them to decide what I should or shouldn't like or watch.
