So, I was thinking about this the other day that after I graduate that its inevitable that I'm going to be moving relatively far from home to pursue my career in engineering.
The top two most likely places where I would be seeking work are the Portland, OR or Seattle, WA areas, but for the sake of thinking outside the box; I was curious as to if FAN had any good ideas as far as nice places to live with steady job growth are concerned. I realize that I could go to the google machine, but I'm also interested in the feedback of others.

I'm looking at manufacturing/industrial engineering though I'm still at a point where I haven't taken anything specialized yet and can change if I find something else that I like.

Edmonton and Calgary are the two fastest growing cities in North America since 2008 and there are tons of engineering jobs here. However with the Oil Prices plunging their maybe a economy crash here (I doubt it'll be very bad). Where are you from OP?

Are you a mechanical enginner by any chance? If so, welcome to the club. I just graduated a few weeks ago from Long Beach State as an ME. Honestly, there are still a lot of industrial/manufacturing jobs in Southern California. Yes it's crowded, but a lot of these jobs are located in the South Bay(Torrance, El Segundo, Hawthorne, etc), Southern Los Angeles county(Long Beach,Downey,Santa Fe Springs, etc), Orange County, and Northern San Diego county. A lot of these companies are located in really nice, quiet suburbs that are still close to a lot of the advantages and amenities of Los Angeles and San Diego.

There's also the Carolinas. I do know that most of my ME and CE friends from school went to Seattle to put time in after graduation and then relocated back here to LB and El Segundo. There's also places in Glendale and Burbank.

I should alao mention that a lot of auromotive engineering jobs are also still on the West Coast. I know for a fact that Toyota, Honda, Kia, and BMW have engineering departments out here. Also a lot of the Japanese auto manufacturers also have more manufacturing and QA engineering positions in states like Ohio(especially near Columbus) and Tennessee.

Honestly, if you're looking for Engineering jobs, I hear Seattle has a pretty fantastic job market.

Honestly I would go to a cities/state subreddit you're interested in and just ask how the job market is, cost of living, public transit, safety, weather, and all that fun shit. Like what are you looking for in a city and why Seattle and Portland?

Somewhere that's a strong hub for engineering. I'd rather not move around a lot if I can just stay in one place in the event I have to take another job offer/look for a different job. B. A place with good schools. I hope to get custody of my boys after I'm have my debts squared away, and would like them to be in a public school system that isn't terrible. C. A place that has lots of concerts regularly. I'm a huge music nerd, and would love the opportunity to go see a show without the worry of traveling long distances whenever I please. D. Somewhere not ridiculously expensive. Wanting to get school loans and back child support paid off in record time. I can't really think of anything else other than the climate not being outrageously hot or cold, and some place where the pollen count won't make my head explode.

Sounds like you want Silverdale, WA Southern California fits the criteria of your first three options. Not really the last one, however.

How far out of L.A. or San Diego do you have to live for things to not be terribly expensive?
