I was in sixth or seventh grade, so it would've been around '97 or '98. I was riding in the car with my mom and 'One' came on the stereo. It blew my f***ing mind and completely changed the way I looked at music. A few days later, I bought the '...And Justice For All' cassette and never looked back. To this day, they're still my favorite band.

It was my boy scout troop around 1994. They were playing And Justice For All.
Unbeknownst them, the nerdy black kid heard Metallica and didn't freak out, but found it quite enjoyable.

"Enter Sandman" being used as The Sandman's theme and songs like "Sad But True" and "King Nothing" being played during the constant commercial breaks on ECW Television.

91, I was 11 and I saw the video for Enter Sandman on TV & thought these guys were awesome.
In fact 91 was a formative year for me I discovered Metallica, Gun & Roses, Christina Applegate & saw T2 on the big screen

My older sister was a big fan around the time One was a big hit. She turned me into a huge fan as well. The first time she played it for me I knew this was "my band" and it has been ever since.
In high school, I was even known as The Metallica Guy. I literally owned something like 63 Metallica t-shirts and that's all I wore with the occasional GNR or White Zombie shirt thrown in about once a week. Seeing them live in 1997 was damn near a religious experience for me.

It was 1994 or so. Just starting to get into music, and my oldest sister was big on Thrash and she was gave me her Metallica and Anthrax albums. ...And Justice For All was the fist one I listened to. My favorite album of theirs since.

Summer of 97. I had to have been 11 maybe 12 and I asked my older cousin to make me a mixtape of great rock music. Changed my life.

I remember being 5 or 6 and my older cousin's friend would menacingly sing Enter Sandman to me and my younger cousin. That guy was and still is a huge piece of shit.

My 8th grade English teacher showed us the video for "One" as part of a lesson on...something. A lot of his lessons seemed to be flimsy excuses to show either music videos or sci-fi movies.

The Ramones thread gave me the idea to do this thread. For me it would be hearing Enter Sandman around the mid-90s and digging it. I got the Black Album soon after, and a month or so after that i picked up Master of Puppets at a flea market and it instantly became one of my favorite albums upon first listening. Every few weekends my Dad would go hang out with someone he worked with. This guy's son,Thomas, was huge into music. It was sometime in 1985 he had started making cassettes of songs he thought I would enjoy. Went over to visit and got handed a cassette with "Ride the Lightning" on it. Loved it and a few weekends later bought Kill em all and Ride the Lightning from Record Bar. Stayed a fan until the Black Album. Wasn't a fan of And Justice for all,but the Black Album was a change,in my eyes,in the wrong direction. Seen them two times now. First was when they were touring with Faith No More and Guns and Roses. Then when they headlined that one Lollapalooza tour. Would have much rather seen them with Burton. But I was like 12 when he died.

"For Whom the Bell Tolls", back in high school (Grade 10-11, so '85-86). Would hang out with a group of friends on weekends, one of whom was a metalhead and introduced me to the genre.
Back then, around where I live, you had to know a little about the music or you'd get beat up at the bush parties for asking "Who is that?" I found out that there was a bit of a 'hierarchy' to the Big Four... knowing Metallica got you in the door, appreciating Megadeth got you a little respect, listening to Slayer kept the posers away, playing Anthrax made you a metal nerd.
I preferred Anthrax. It was like Metallica was mad at the world, Megadeth was mad at... well, Metallica, and Slayer were like those weird kids that sat in the corner pulling wings off flies. Anthrax was the only group that were having fun and that's why I liked them.

I was probably about 5 or 6 when I first saw the "One" video, thought it was weird, but enjoyed it. Didn't really put much thought into it until I was 11, and I got my first iPod as a gift for starting High School. My dad loaded a bunch of stuff onto it, including Metallica, I listened to One, recognised it, listened to the rest of their stuff and thoroughly enjoyed it. Been a huge fan ever since!

2007-ish
Was browsing metal music when I came across their cover version of Ennio Morricone's, "Ecstasy of Gold" on YouTube.
Became a fan ever since.

My family used to be pretty close knit back in the day. As such, I spent A LOT of time with my Aunt and Uncle who are about ten years my senior as a little guy. They taught me the ways of the 80's.
My Aunt Tori taught me the lyrics to One at eight and used to do me up like Billy Idol. My Uncle Dale got me to love Megadeth and The Scorpions.
I didn't fully embrace Metallica until I was maybe 12, but when I did it was a seamless transition and I went all in. I still pop hard for just about any of their tunes even though I'm not their exclusive mark anymore.
