He went from the Main Event of Survivor Series to floundering.
{Spoiler}{Spoiler} He also lost a Rumble qualifying match on Smackdown.

He's Erick Rowan. Sure he's a serviceable big man. But he wasn't the one people enjoyed during the Wyatt run. He was only used because Sheamus went down now that Sheamus is most likely back Sunday Rowan will just go back to where he was prior to Sheamus being hurt.
Also working with the Big Show in 2014/2015 doesn't help even if you are set to get a big push like Reigns is.

He was never meant to be a big deal. He served as someone to make heels (whoever they may be) look good. He's a big guy and somewhat decent in the ring, but by no means meant to be any more than that. Think Hercules as a face in the 80's. Rowan is in the Rowan spot.

His faction was broken up. For very little reason.

They didn't try As is the case with 90% of the roster. If you are not: Cena, Rollins, Big Blow or Kane...you are royally screwed. They got to push Big Blow! So much potential in this exciting young up and comer...lol.

I always found him to be the Hunico/Mike Knox spot for the Survivor Series match

Kind of helps it seem like there's a point. As for what went wrong with Rowan, dunno if much did. He's had a decent run, and a better one than many expected once he was moved away from Luke and Bray. The guy still wears the mark of his servitude, I don't think being a leader was in the cards for him.

He was getting pretty good reactions. But as soon as he lost to Big Show he just plummeted in crowd reaction.

The question should be what went right for Rowan at all after the Wyatt Family breakup. Guy eliminated no one at Survivor Series, has had no character development other than not liking bullies, got decisively beaten by Show at TLC, and fired by the Authority. If WWE were competent I'd assume he's being punished, but as is the mid-card booking just sucks. Rowan is just unfortunate enough to not have any outstanding qualities to compensate for it.

I don't know, I watched too many miserable "Rowan's super smart guys, isn't Eric Rowan quirky cool" cutesy poo NXT bullshit segments to say he didn't have character development.

If you're referring to NXT stuff the Wyatt Family did prior to May 2013 to be honest I haven't seen any of it, but considering the loose application of what can laughably be called "WWE Canon" to NXT stuff, its relevance is at least questionable. Any of the supergenius Rowan stuff they did on Raw amounted to nothing and seemed so patchworked (because Erick has always been a great: *dice roll* winemaker and guitarist) and so forgotten about immediately that its basically meaningless as well.

I never expected him to go anywhere post-Wyatt Family. He started off getting reactions, much to my surprise - hell, I was reacting, and I've always been only about 10% sold on the guy- but the Big Show loss made sure none of that continued.

He's not very good to be honest. He got a little better, but he was hid well in the Wyatt Family. Wyatt and Harper are both very talented, so therefore, the whole group got a lift from it.
In developmental, you have so many talented stars, and on the roster, you have so many talented stars. There are big guys like Sheamus and Harper who can go with the best of them, and even Big Show and Kane, despite being older and less mobile, are still better then Erick Rowan.

No I'm talking about the Rubik's cube stuff, the chess game stuff the like "oh lol wrestling's fake but it's cool in an ironic way" kinda NXT flavored stuff that constituted Rowan's face turn outside of warm body alongside Dolph Ziggler and Ryback.
