I just got off of work so I'm catching up on the Iowa Corn 300 as it airs, and man already HUGE opportunity for the guys chasing Montoya as he's out of the race first.

Hunter-Reay wins in Iowa. Newgarden second, Karam third, Rahal fourth, Munoz fifth. Rahal moves into 2nd in the championship, 42 points behind Rahal. Americans take six of the top seven spots, which that has to be a long time since that happened.
Iowa is just such a damn good event for IndyCar.

As a racer, we know the dangers. There's always the chance of something going horribly wrong. It's always in the back of your mind. But you ignore it, you push to a corner that you don't see. Because it's our passion to get in the car. And to race, to compete. No matter if it's Drag Racing, Stock Car racing, Indy Car, Formula 1, Motocross, SuperCars, etc. But the loss of a fellow racer is never easy. Especially when it's one who was so young and full of life, and one who was liked by nearly everyone, if not everyone, he met or raced with. One who had a great career ahead of him, a future champion, if you will. Godspeed, Jules Bianchi. You will be missed.

A bit of shameless self-promotion, but I hope it'll be tolerated, plus I wasn't sure where to put it. Inspired by the 2013 film Senna, this is my attempt at a film trailer looking at the life of Dan Wheldon, hopefully with one day in my head getting the real thing made if I was to ever get any money or financial backing to do so. Most of the time with my videos all I do is essentially take pre-existing videos and re-interpret them into a pre-existing template as it were, so this was the first time that I have ever had to craft the narrative from scratch and it was a new challenge. Obviously a lack of film clips available did limit my attempt to get the thing looking as professional as possible and I am not a professional editor but rather an enthusiastic amateur. PS. I know I shouldn't have put the Universal logo in and it was boneheaded of me considering copyright, but apart from that I would like to think it turned out OK. Consider this part taster vid, part building editing skills and part tribute to a great man. Hope it's OK for you. www.youtube.com/watch?v=78hwenSlmiY

Kyle Busch really wants to make the chase, as he wins his 3rd race since returning.

Kyle Busch really wants to make the chase, as he wins his 3rd race since returning. And like every year he's made the chase, he'll probably end up screwing it all up somehow.

The FIA has announced that it will retire the #17 from use in F1 in honor of Jules Bianchi.

The FIA has announced that it will retire the #17 from use in F1 in honor of Jules Bianchi. Did they do that as well for Senna?

The FIA has announced that it will retire the #17 from use in F1 in honor of Jules Bianchi. Did they do that as well for Senna? Nope. He was racing the #2 at the time of his death snd that number automatically goes to the teammate of the defending champion unless he chooses to decline. Nobody had declined its use until this season.

It's really only the last few years since the revamp of the numbering system that's lent itself to being able to retire numbers. You had the numbers-set-by-points from 1996 to a few years ago, and before that it was more NASCAR-ish in the teams keeping possession of the numbers for the most part (hence the associations between Ferrari and 27/28, for example), but even then you still had the champion and his teammate having 1 or 2. (or 0 and 2, as the case may have been).
I wasn't a fan of the new F1 numbering system at first, but it's grown on me considerably since then.

The FIA has announced that it will retire the #17 from use in F1 in honor of Jules Bianchi. Did they do that as well for Senna? They didn't retire any numbers because for most of F1's existence the car numbers had either been arbitrarily chosen by the teams, or assigned automatically by rank in the previous season's constructors championship, except for the defending drivers champion and their team, who'd get #1 and #2. (Which led to the hilarious anomaly of perennial midfield team Arrows bearing #1 and #2 in 1997 because reigning 1996 champion Damon Hill was their lead driver)

I wondered about that. It makes sense as well, because other motorsports don't retire numbers.
So this is definitely a big deal.

And of course a certain Indycar forum is bitching to no end about it, even though it's not their problem. It's a pretty damn pessimistic worldview to say that if you're going to retire numbers,"Within a decade we'd be needing triple-digit numbers and fractions".

Accident for Perez in Practice 1 at Hungary. Looks like a rear suspension failure, he hit the barrier and ended up upside down. Perez is fine, he's out the car and back in the pits talking to the media. different view

Still, I'm very pleased to know he's doing all right.

Still, I'm very pleased to know he's doing all right. It seemed a lot worse live, with the camera cutting to an upside down car surrounded by debris. I've seen it a couple of times since on the news and you're right about it not being too bad, Raikkonen had a similar crash a while back where he speared the barrier then came back across the track which was a lot worse. It's only really notable for the car ending the wrong way up and the timing of it.
