I just didn't like the Watchmen movie at all, director's cut included. It's the only adaptation I can think of where the director stuck to comic as closely as possible, yet still had no idea what the comic was actually about (the squid excluded of course).

Limiting it to 5 makes it pretty tough but I'd go
-The Dark Knight -Avengers -Spider-Man 2 -X-Men First Class -Captain America: Winter Solider

I would say:
Persepolis- Shows comic books as a medium for autobiography, one of its strong points ever since Will Eisner went that route.
The Dark Knight- First truly critically acclaimed comic book film, box office mega hit, delved into the archetypes of heroes and villains in a way that hadn't been done (and I say this as someone who's not a big fan of the film).
The Avengers- Biggest comic book success story; film that truly showed a world of superheroes and villains; the culmination of years of planning. Moments during the New York City fight captured comic books in a way that, imo, has not been equaled.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World- Showed what smaller indy comics could do; visualized a truly comic book inspired world that worked in comic book logic.
X-Men: First Class- Best representation of super powered characters integrated in actual history.
There's several more, of course, and the quality is pretty high, imo.

well the obvious ones to watch are the two Fantastic Four movies, Hulk, Daredevil, Elektra, Green Lantern, Spider-Man 3, X-Men 3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, both Ghost Rider movies, the Punisher movies, Jonah Hex, Watchmen and Man of Steel. you can skip the others. Well, I liked Green Lantern, X-Men III, Watchmen, and Man of Steel. But I think in general, people probably shouldn't be taking my advice about what movies to anyways.

I enjoyed most of Phase One Marvel but only merely tolerated Phase II. The stand-out so far was Winter Soldier of that particular era. Oh, and SHIELD of course.
Raimi's Spider-Man II, however flawed, is a good time with a tight grip on a well-woven scenario for the character Dark Knight Trilogy is a must-see, even if it gets very overindulgent with the third (seriously, I felt like I was right back in the 90s with it)

I totally going to cheat since you said to try to limit it to five but didn't say it was a strict rule.
1. Everything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe
2. The Dark Knight Trilogy
3. All the X-Men movies (yes even Wolverine and X-Men 3)
4. Scott Pilgrim
5. Dredd
6. Man Of Steel ( I hated it when it first came out, and while not as good as Marvels films it's pretty cool and has grown on me with a few more viewings.)
7. The Toby Maguire Spider-Man movies

It's the only adaptation I can think of where the director stuck to comic as closely as possible, yet still had no idea what the comic was actually about (the squid excluded of course). I think one of my problems with the movie is that Watchmen is so carefully constructed as a graphic novel, and everything in it, from the side stories to the phony ads to the symmetrical layout, adds to the feel and the story. The story itself could be adapted, and I think he did a fine job in doing it, but it was always going to lose a lot because all of the things that make it a "real" superhero story couldn't be put into a movie.
