Has there ever been a more obscure guy who was hyped as a legend by the WWF? I mean who knew about this guy before the WWF brought him in? Outside of maybe 12 fans in Burnet County Texas...
The WWF had a hard enough time selling Backlund as a legend when he returned (they had to re-educate the current fanbase as to who he was, even though he wrestled in the fed only 9 years prior) But Lothario was so obscure. I mean it almost seemed like he was some guy off the street.
What's interesting is that Michaels supposedly didn't care for his company at all, but instead of pulling the plug on him early they kept trotting him out there with Michaels. Very odd.
If anything he detracted from Michaels. And when Sid knocked him out with the TV camera at MSG in 1996(which resulted in a hilarious GRAAAGH from Jose) Sid actually got a bit of a pop from doing so. But mostly the fans were indifferent and apathetic to what just happened.

In reality, he was actually Shawn's pimp, or at least that's what it came off as.

Shawn saying "get that piece of shit" outta my ring about either Jose or Bret at WM12 is very very funny.
Edit:
What was this all about?

Because they sure as hell ran for the exits as he was doing his "boyhood dream" moment in the middle of the ring.

They wanted to make Shawn into Bret so badly as he wasn't catching on as they had hoped so they tried to transform him into someone carrying on a long tradition in wrestling as they thought that was what people loved about Bret. They didn't have a Stu Hart to trot out so they went with the guy who trained Shawn and tried to make him seem like a legendary figure in his own right.
Did Jose train anyone else of note aside from Shawn?

As big of a HBK fan I was at the time, when Sid knocked out Jose and beat Michaels for the belt I was hype.

Jose was WWF's attempt to try to humanize HBK to the masses. The problems were that HBK hated the dude and Jose had the on screen presence of a 2 week old bologna sandwich. He took away the arrogant prick charm that Michaels had and made him more hated to fans.

oh I'm surprised they didn't try to call him Super Soaker Jose Lothario at that time. Seems like they were promoting the hell out of those things.

Super Sock was a reference to him being the first Brass Knuckles champion or something.
