Cena and his booking to me were embodied by one match in that first run as champion.
He beat Kurt Angle in a special referee match. Daivari was the referee. Kurt's manager, Daivari.

Just goes to show how even a massively over wrestler can be killed by exposing them to the biggest audience you have.

I was in attendance as this was in St. Louis and it was probably the biggest pop I've ever heard in person. I still liked Cena at the time, but that would all change in the fall of that year.

The fact that they put Daivari, who probably still had a lot of residual heat from the run with Muhammad Hassan a few months before, with Angle in the first place tells a lot of how hard they tried to get Angle hated over Cena.

I remember this well, it now looks so ominous, his arrival at Raw. Who knew that once he came out to that ring he'd never leave.

I miss young and popular Cena. He was great. Back then, it was like Cena wasn't officially looked at as The Guy yet in the fan's eyes. He was just a guy getting a shot who was mega-popular. Of course it changed but right then it was different.

He's still over. Are we pretending he isn't?

He's still over. Are we pretending he isn't? True, over doesn't just mean beloved. Hell, one of the most over people they have is Stephanie. She'd get heat at a wake.

I didn't "get" it at the time. I'm not saying I've never liked Cena in the last 10 years but to me when he debuted it seemed forced how big a star he was made out to be. Jericho reacted as if The Rock or Steve Austins music had hit and I just wasn't buying a Smackdown guy as a huge deal.

It was the first draft in which a world champion got drafted.

He's still over. Are we pretending he isn't? Oh definitely. I just meant it in the context of the universal cheers he clearly got there. Just a few months later, he never would again. But of course he's still the top guy.

Everyone in that video sold it perfectly , JR , Jericho , the fans , Cena himself & even King sold it quite goood . This the second most shocking moment in Cena's career ( first being return in the 2008 rumble ) . I think in Vinces mind , Cena is still getting the same reaction

I remember when he fought Lesnar for the title in 2003 and, despite being the heel, was getting loud "let's go Cena" chants. How times have changed!

I love how while they were waiting JR asks "well is it a man or a woman?" Part of me loves that he asked that question. A more cynical part of me wonders why he would think the first round draft pick in WWE would ever be a woman.
Admittedly I wasn't interested in the Cena character at the time because I wasn't interested in rap but I gotta admit, that moment was unexpected.
