So in the 80's & early 90's Vince was only known as a commentator and wasn't addressed as the boss.
Were there any moments in the early days when Vince was hinted as the boss during kayfabe or semi-kayfabe times?
One example I notice is the opening of WM4 when they introduce bob uecker to which he says "I was so excited when Vince McMahon called and invited me to wrestlemania!"
Also I think when Vince is interviewing Hogan on TNT I think Hogan calls him Mr McMahon at one point, but I might be wrong...

An episode of WWF Mania included a short segment on the company's charitable efforts. The final frame was a picture of Vince, and the bottom read:
Vince McMahon President and CEO Titan Sports World Wrestling Federation

Sometimes Ventura would allude to getting a raise or something to that effect when broadcasting a show with Vince "Hey who do I talk to about getting an extra 0 on my paycheck Mick Man, surely I deserve it!? And Vince would grumble under his breath "we'll see about that NOW BACK TO THE ACTION BAAAAACK BODY DROP"

The Uecker comment also stands out to me but I think it could always be chalked up to Vince being an errand boy, so to speak. Like he takes care of calling the celebrities to come to the show.
One of the summer 1991 WWF Magazines (I'm thinking Bulldog or Warrior/Hogan on the cover) had a write up in the back, written by Vince, addressing Superstar Billy Graham and the steroid issue. I think it may have referred to his CEO position in the sign off ending.

The first Slammy awards.
But seriously, why would an announcer have a headline spot on an award show, with Hogan and Macho in his backing band?

Also the second Slammys. Stand Back was a pretty clear indication.

Vince gave himself an award for the success of the first Wrestlemania.

As a kid, I didn't give much thought to such things, but I remember finding out about it during the news stories surrounding the steroid controversy.

My friend told me at one point that Vince was the real owner, I did believe it but at the same time I didn't want to believe that tunney was just a made up character, lol.

As mentioned, Ventura would make subtle hints that Vince was the owner at times when they did commentary together.

There were clues, like Jesse's snarky asides. But the first time an on-air talent called Vince out as the owner was JR's worked shoot.

Anyone who was reading the Apter Mags, or really, any non-WWF mags knew from the get-go.

Before I knew he was the boss, I read an opinion of his about Hulk Hogan in a copy of Wrestling Superstars, which they used to do on the back of a full color section each issue that focused on a certain wrestler-kinda like the Playboy profiles I learned later..
Anyway, he said something to the affect that he thought Hogan, wasn't necessarily through, but that maybe he had been in the spotlight long enough and I was shocked to read that.
I can't remember when this was, but it was toward the end of Hogan's first title run if I'm not mistaken

Which is funny that the Apter mags would casually mention McMahon's ownership status when you consider how much they adhered to kayfabe back in the day! They were weird like that. They adhered to kayfabe a good bit, even creating a LOT of their own, but there were some ways they just didn't care. McMahon was often mentioned as owning the WWF. They were quick to point out gimmick changes at times (some of their Year-in-Reviews would even have articles that were nothing but lists of guys who changed identities). They LOVED to dredge up Hogan's pre-Hulkamania past (a lot of their coverage of the build-up to WM3 utilized the previous Hogan/Andre Shea Stadium match) and remind people he wasn't always a superhero.

WWF magazine actually had him listed as owner in the publishing credits, that's how I learned.
