...then why doesn't he just commentate himself again?
That'd certainly cut out the middleman and it's not like he doesn't have an established history doing it. They could even come up with an in-character "Mr. McMahon wants to make sure that the shots are called the right way" justification for it.
I don't know how much he does backstage at any given Raw anymore, but certainly if he's calling shots he could do it with the mic off or just with a laptop or something.

Vince is a secret Briscoe Brothers mark, so he's been growing his beard out and chewing tobacco. He can't do that on TV, because it's not aesthetically pleasing.

I still don't believe that Vince is telling them what to say. Those guys almost never say "UUUUUUNNN BEEEEEEE LIEEEVABLLLLLLLLLLLE!!!" or "Ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaa" or "BIIIIIIIIIIIG BACK BODY DROP" or "HE GOT HIM!! THIS IS IT!! IT'S OVER!! HE GOT HI...no"

I don't think a nearly 70 year-old man can be expected to consistently hold it in for three hours every Monday.

I don't think a nearly 70 year-old man can be expected to consistently hold it in for three hours every Monday. Given how Vince can be, he'd just slap on a radio mic and commentate while on the loo. Let's be honest, you don't really need to see what's going on in the ring to commentate the WWE style these days, he could talk about anything and no-one would notice he's not at ringside.

Because so many people know him as his Mr. Mcmahon gimmick.

I think Vince is a very underrated commentator. He had a great voice for it.

Cause he was an awful announcer. Every time the action started to pick up he sounded like an old man with a hearing that was barely working, he didn't know the name to any of the maneuvers, and sometimes he wouldn't even know the names of the people in the ring.

There's a Survivor Series where Ventura and Vince are calling a match with the Jumping Bomb Angels. Jesse asks Vince what the names are of the tag team, and Vince doesn't have the information, so he suggests they call them by the color of their trunks: "Pink" and "Red." Jesse: "Aw, THAT's real clever."

I hardly doubt Vince has it in him to sustain his old loud commentary for three hours a week every Monday, as well as PPVs.

Vince on commentary again would be one of the few ways I can think of to make me permanently stop watching.
*body slam*
"ONE TWO....HE GOT HIM! YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! no."

"ONE TWO....HE GOT HIM! YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! wait that wasn't even a pin*

I don't think a nearly 70 year-old man can be expected to consistently hold it in for three hours every Monday. This is Vincent Kennedy McMahon we're talking about. He'd just shit himself at the table and the many ensuing jokes would be the commentary subject of choice for the evening.

Because yelling into the earpieces means he can control 2/3 of the commentators (Cole and JBL - IIRC King is well known for not putting up with it). If he were at the table, he'd only be able to control himself directly.

Jesse: "Aw, THAT's real clever." I don't remember if it was this match or another one, but Vince did say he knew their names, but didn't want to butcher them. Then, he later says their names. I think the reason he didn't want to use their names initially was because he didn't think his audience would be able to easily remember them.

Whether it's because JBL studied alot of lawler commentary or if it's because of Vince in their ear I couldn't say.
