I know this is being talked about in the Shimmer thread but as Portia is one of the biggest names on the women indie scene in general I thought she deserved her own thread. So after eleven years in the industry Portia Perez is announced at Shimmer Volume 76 yesterday that she is having to retire due to a neck injury. Portia has been with Shimmer since Volume 5 in 2006 and has been on almost every volume since and was a two time tag team champion with Nicole Matthews. I think only Cheerleader Melissa has been on more volumes than her too. Her last match will be a 4 vs 4 match at Volume 79 tomorrow with the participants being revealed on the show. If this is the end of Portia's career then it's a massive shame. She's been my favourite wrestler, male or female, for the last seven years and is also one of my favourite ever commentators too. She's been a massive part of Shimmer both on-screen and backstage and I am very thankful for all she's done for wrestling. For my money despite Saraya Knight, Lacey, Rebecca Knox, Nicole Matthews and other great heels Portia Perez is the greatest heel in the company's ten year history and I love that she stayed a heel during her promo. Despite all that she's perhaps the most beloved woman on the roster by its fans so it could be a sad time indeed.  |

That sucks for her. I kind of thought she was already retired because she wasn't so everywhere like she used to be and the lovefest she had on here really quiet down last couple years. I wish her the best on a happy healthy life. Sucks about her neck.

She's attractive in a different way than a lot of the divas are imo. Most of the divas are attractive in a sleazy hookup kinda way, Portia's the kinda girl who you'd go out with and take home to your parents and settle down with. I can agree with that. |

That's too bad. I enjoyed the little bit of her Shimmer work I saw, and I liked her commentary too. She had a pretty funny "announcer voice" and also managed to do a legitimately good job.

That's a shame. She had one of my favourite crowd interactions ever in wrestling, which was with her theme ("Edge Of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks).

11 years in the business and still on the edge of seventeen? Did she start wrestling when she was 5?
Seriously though, Perez was a real stand out star in Women's wrestling with an amazing personality and charisma. Hopefully she stays on as a commentator for Shimmer or something.
I remember meeting her and Matthews at a supershow 5-6 years ago and she was very cool to talk to and seemed very genuine.
I actually saw her again last year at the Shimmer show in San Jose and still seemed to retain that same down to earth, cool personality.

I admit to having never been a big follower or fan of women's wrestling but I remember hearing this board go on and on for Portia back in 2011 or so. Then she appeared at PWG and kind of stunk the joint up along with the following day at the NWA Hollywood tapings so I never understood her appeal or why so many sung her praises.
But obviously it's never good to hear a young woman having neck issues and she is making the right decision as she has the rest of her life to live.
