I'm thinking 2004 was the first time they had the sign? Unless I'm wrong.
So in trying to figure this out, who was the first guy?
Shawn Michaels? Brock Lesnar? Goldberg?

I'm not sure.
Let's just say it was Sin Cara.

IIRC it became a thing around 2008/09. It was very obvious when Orton won in '09 and the referee tried to get him in the right position, while Orton kept trying to point at it from different spots in the ring.

Orton trying to set the fireworks off by pointing at the sign and it not woring until he steps on the middle rope and does it will never not be funny.

I swear Benoit did it during 2004.

Just went back and watched RR '04, and no, Benoit doesn't point at the sign. He just kinda pumps his arms and poses on the turnbuckle, but doesn't even look at the sign really.

I think it might have been The Executioner.
He pointed to the Wrestlemania 1 sign and Vince said "Yeah Buddy, that's what we're callin' it, hahahahahah!"

Why did this become a thing, exactly?

I thought maybe Yokozuna did in 93.. But it turns out he was trying to get the attention of a hot dog vendor.

Why did this become a thing, exactly? It's an easy visual to show "WE'RE ON THE ROAD TO WRESTLEMANIA FOLKS" (well except for Orton in 09), but like many WWE things they overdid it to the point that it's a joke now.

It became a thing when they began to manufacture awkward and forced "Wrestlemania moments" rather than having them happen organically as a consequence of sensible booking.

Why did this become a thing, exactly? Because it makes a nice replacement for writing an actual story?

I wanna say it was the 2010 rumble (the one with the "epic" Cena/Orton staredown) That practically everybody pointed at the sign.

I don't know if he pointed to it, but they got some nice shots of Batista and the sign after winning his first Royal Rumble

I hate that so much, especially during the show when they say "What a Wrestlemania moment" and "so and so is looking for their Wrestlemania moment" etc. Whatever happened to the fans deciding which moments were special?

You mean a 25 minute talk segment in the middle of the show where the announcers say 'wrestlemania moment' 10 times....is alittle manufactured?
