5 guys.
Due to injuries, booking, or not connecting with the crowd, I remember during the 2005-07 era each guy was pushed as a future main eventer at one time or another.
It didn't work out for any of them.
But if you were in charge, of the 5, who would you make DAMN sure, would become a future main event player and multiple time world champion?
Who honestly had the most potential of this group?

I was big into Kennedy and Benjamin. Not so much the other guys. I'll go with Kennedy since he had a good gimmick and charisma

MVP.
He's the closest thing there to a complete package.

MVP had a distinct gimmick, a very distinct look, but was saddled with some frankly unspectacular finishers. Get him a better finisher and keep him heel as long as possible and that'd work out pretty well methinks.

In order.
1. MVP 2. Lashley 3. Carlito 4. Shelton 5. Kennedy
MVP was closest to the complete package. Lashley had the look. Carlito was closer to the complete package than Lashley, but his motivation and attitude held him back. Shelton's lack of charisma and mic skills hindered him. Kennedy was vastly overrated by people during that time and his TNA run validated my opinion.

I liked Shelton a lot and Lashley I thought was fine in the ring, it was when he opened his mouth where problems started.
Couldn't stand Kennedy, Carlito or MVP.

MVP had a distinct gimmick, a very distinct look, but was saddled with some frankly unspectacular finishers. Get him a better finisher and keep him heel as long as possible and that'd work out pretty well methinks. I don't think it was the finisher/face turn so much as they stopped giving him rivalries. He was great against Benoit, and pure dynamite against Matt Hardy, and then they just stopped putting him in feuds. The fact that MVP's remained an incredible talent almost a decade later is a testament to how, out of the five, he was the biggest missed opportunity. Had this been 2012 though, I would have said Shelton. He was lacking in the mic/promo department in the WWE, but then on the indies/ROH he played less to screaming/staccato cockiness and more toward his natural baritone voice and it made a world of difference. A 2013 run for him in WWE would have been exceptional.

In order:
1) Lashley. He ticks all the boxes for the main event: he has the build that is ideal for what Vince wants, but was athletic enough to where he could have decent matches. He had an impressive amateur background, which could help him transition better, and could be used against guys with similar backgrounds like Sylvester Terkay (surprised they gave up on him so fast, given his amateur and MMA credentials). Mic skills were a weakness, but came off as a soft-spoken nice guy, which could have made him more relatable than guys like Cena or Batista. He should have gone over Cena in 2007.
2) Kennedy. Good in the ring, and mic skills reminiscent of the Rock. When he wasn't injured (which was unfortunately more often than not), was consistently one of the high points of the show.
3) Carlito. I tabbed him to be one of the next-gen stars. One problem he had was he hated being a face, and any time he worked heel, he had to tone down his impressive moveset to keep fans from cheering him.
4) MVP. He was green when he first started, but improved quickly, and was always entertaining.
5) Shelton. Not a knock on him being last. He was upper-midcard easily, but stop/start pushes and use in comedy angles killed him. Mic skills were an issue, though he wasn't terrible either.

Thing is, Lashley would've probably hell, near certainly been a top guy had he not quit over Kristal's firing. Probably would've made us appreciate Cena a lot more. But if you think about it, where would these guys have had fit in that era in the main event with Cena in the early years of his dominance. Batista was the smackdown Cena, Orton was getting over as a dastardly heel as was Edge., Taker and HHH was still active. Along with more popular acts in the non title scene such as HBK, Mysterio, Jeff Hardy. It wouldn't have been until the Miz won the title to pull the trigger on any one of these guys, and they were either gone by then or the ship has sailed. Morrison they could have done something with.

MVP was my favorite wrestler when he was a heel. His rivalry with Matt Hardy was the best thing in SmackDown at that time.

At the time, Kennedy. Like pretty much everyone else in 2005-early 07...

I sorta don't include Shelton in this bunch since he predates them by a couple years. I'm more inclined to include Punk and Paul Burchill in this group (although those two are on total opposite ends of the spectrum from each other)

Lashley is like if you took every critique said about Roman Reigns and made it absolutely true. "Roman is superman" Right, until I see him jump into a cage and knock the entire side of it off, have Gauntlet matches where he handily defeats 3-4 guys in one night, break the Masterlock, feud with Vince himself, etc, I am going to feel like he falls short of that level of being pushed as the manliest man who ever manned a manning man. They wanted to make Lashley a thing so badly.
That said, he did eventually mature into a better performer, doing pretty good as TNA champion, and before he left, his short feud with Cena was actually pretty decent.
Of these, I voted Shelton, but I was a fan of all of them at one point or another, and lost faith in their ability to main event one at a time, but they were all good midcarders.

MVP was AWESOME when he first turned face until they chopped his balls off and stuck him with Mark Henry.

Mr Kennedy was terrible, Benjamin was servicable, Carlito started off great then gradually stopped giving a f***, Lashley was the shits. MVP should have been built up to be a Main Event heel with a few title runs.
Still though, I do sometimes think about how these guys were meant to be the future of the company, and they're absolutely not a patch on a lot of the guys we have around at the minute. The roster now compared to then is lightyears ahead in terms of talent
