I actually saw that part of the movie for the first time last week and all I could think of was "Everyone's dead Dave."

I feel terrible, but I always laugh at George's delivery of the line about "Why did we have to have all these kids anyway?!" Its such a horrific thing to say, but the remark is said in that charming Jimmy Stewart stammer voice, so it feels completely at odds with the tone of the scene. It gave me the image of a running gag where Stewart utters the worst things, yet everyone just smiles and nods, oblivious to how hateful he is.

I've never watched this movie, which is odd considering I like Christmas movies, and love Mr. Smtih Goes to Washington which is also Frank Capra/Jimmy Stewart.

Most of the movie is George expressing bitterness because he feels his life is slipping away as he is stuck in a rut while his buddies move on and move up in the world. He has a job he doesn't like but if he steps away from it, his father's rival will monopolize the town. He's shackled with this family he's not exactly sure he even wants, but he's just going along with it, just like running the S&L. Until he has one bad day. |

A lot of that comes from pop culture essentially forgetting the first two thirds (non Christmas parts) of the movie which swings between occasional comedy and character drama about the realistic effects a man deciding to sacrifice for his town actually has. Hell up until Clarence shows up the film seems like its setting up a Kafka tragedy of George Bailey's efforts in saving Bedford Falls ultimately being in vain against the cruel reality of the world around him. Its why I'll always forgive any schmaltz the ending has, because damn if Capra (and Stewart with his performance) didn't earn it. All the film really needed was an RJ Fletcher-esque comeuppance for Mr. Potter and we'd be set. |
