That's why I hate when people keep on thinking It's A Wonderful Life is some overly sentimental pap. Most of the movie is George expressing bitterness because he feels his life is slipping away as he is stuck in a rut while his buddies move on and move up in the world. He has a job he doesn't like but if he steps away from it, his father's rival will monopolize the town. He's shackled with this family he's not exactly sure he even wants, but he's just going it, just like running the S&L. Until he has one bad day.
All the film really needed was an RJ Fletcher-esque comeuppance for Mr. Potter and we'd be set.
As much as I love the movie and I do to the point where I watch it and cry at the end every year (Generally starting when George runs through Bedford Falls swelling until he reads Clarence's message at which I point I"m generally bawling) that being said the money giving scene is kind of ruined by the fact that Sam Wainwright wired him 25K when all he needed was 8K thus making everyone dumping money on the table pointless. Plus George said he couldn't reach Sam but Mr.Gower was able to send him a telegraph in whatever real world time George's paranormal experience took. So it wasn't like he was unreachable.
