It kind of depresses me to watch it occur in sports videos though. I find it pathetic to read adults arguing like children about whose team is better. "It's only a bit of banter" is usually said as justification for some of the worst things I've ever seen one human being say to another. Most of these knuckle-draggers have no idea where the line is.

Depends. Usually, it's because someone decides to make a fan-made music video, and they either don't say what song they used or what film/TV show/anime it's from, sometimes my question is answered in the comments.
More often than not, it's for my own amusement, though.

I like to check-out the comments, sometimes add one myself.
If you watch something sociopolitical the discussion can get heated and yes sometimes people will just be douchey or troll. But it's nothing I'm going to get worked-up over. The majority partake in decent conversation or comments

The rare times I do read youtube comments they're usually so over the top I can't find myself to believe they're legit.
