Some months ago, my old laptop had an issue that cannot be repaired. I took it into a computer shop, they opened it up, and found something had spilled into the vents and the inside was literally corroding and burnt up (they even took pics). They did tell me, however, that the hard drive was intact and that if I paid them a fee they could pull the hard drive and transfer the contents to a new computer or an external drive. Specifically, they told me they had a cord that would plug into the hard drive directly and pull the contents even if the computer it was from was non-functioning. At the time I didn't have the money or an external drive that could hold everything, so I shook the deal off.
Fast-forward to now. We've had a few issues with this computer store since then. I'll spare the details, but using them again is out of the question. I've been wanting to transfer the contents of this old hard drive over to an external drive I picked up cheap at a garage sale (already tested, works fine) so I can transfer things over to my current laptop. I don't want to copy EVERYTHING over, but I don't wanna transfer just a little bit either (my music/video/photo collection and old college/work documents being the bulk of it).
My question is, does this cord they're talking about that plugs directly into the hard drive and allows transfer to another computer or an external drive actually exist? And if it does, what do I need to search for to find one and/or how much does one cost? I'd do a quick Google search, but I can't even begin to guess what needs to be searched, and I keep just shotgunning search terms hoping to get a lead, to no avail. I don't know a lot about fixing computers, but I feel confident enough in taking apart a non-functioning laptop that I don't need to worry about putting back together and pulling the hard drive out. And unless there's something more to it I'm missing, I bet I can handle business from there.
