"With Final Fantasy VII Remake abandoning the Active-Time Battle system for a more action-oriented approach, the time has come to discuss whether or not traditional JRPG battles really are "dated."
Are they dated, or is it just something the industry decided one day? What exactly is wrong with Active-Time and turn-based combat systems? I, for one, can't say I see what makes them so distasteful."

I 100% agree with Jim on this one. Turn-based JRPG's are one of my favourite video game genres, and the recent negativity towards them is something I don't understand.

I haven't watched this yet, haven't decided if I will, but I really liked the way FFX handled turn based battles. That said, it was also REALLY easy to abuse (Hastega and Quick Attack or whatever it was called meant Tidus was extremely potent, and since even many powerful enemies were vulnerable to Delay Attack... oh boy things get silly.). I would have to see more before I decided if I minded the new system, just I know Square is dead serious about making this game work, it's been their trump card they could pull out, and nothing else would top it. Maaaaybe they could approach it to a degree with a Chrono Trigger, but I wouldn't count on that. I think Square will do their best, so I am optimistic it'll be fine.

One of my favorite series is pokemon and one of my favorite game on the 360 is the stick of truth. Both uses an turn based system and both are popular games too. I think it coming from the outdate idea that jrpg are not popular in the west and that Japanese company need to make their game more like western rpg in order for them to sell here, hence the reason why most jrpg don't even come out here unless their part of a major franchise.

I'm not a fan of the turn-based battle system, despite two of my favourite games (the Knights of the Old Republic games) using it.
